Right, I cant see anything about this on here which is a crime, you can get the game from here http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/, be warned though, it has a very steep learning curve, but then thats half the fun. It a management sim with dungeon keeper being its main relative, except it all done in ASCII graphics. Its easily become my game of the year from all the little random things that seem to happen everytime I play. for example. One of my miners seemed to like cats a lot so much so that he adopted 6 of them, any way halfway through winter a snakeman pops out of the well and massacres 4 of his cats, ungar (or what ever he was called) starts off in a tantrum and starts hitting things then he goes full on bezerk and kills everything causing me to start again, it had me in stitches. Another time my metalsmith stayed at his forge for 1/2 a year screaming "I NEED ROUGH GEMS" before flying into a rage, luckily though my trusty wardogs made dwarf chunks of him. But down to the basics, the game creates the world you play in, then it gives you the option to either play dwarf fortress mode or adventure mode which is similar to the other ASCII games like Rogue and Nethack except far more violent. Most of the fun in this for me was discovering what to do so I wont spoil that for everyone, but check it out, it is to put it simply. Amazing

I've started a game now and to be honest I'm a little lost. I've had a look the the help quickly in game, and can see how in principle stuff happens, it's just actually doing itMy face is a bit like that of someone shown nethack for the first time with no explanation (although nethack is a little more intuitive).
Any good suggestions or tips on how to get going? I think I figured out how to assign job roles, but how for example do you build your first building to put rooms in?

Theres a really helpful page here http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Main_Pagethis helped me out, if you get through your first year then you should have enough knowledge to expand from there, it took me about 10 attempts before I had anything I could really call a fortress
some quick tips, use d (designate) to give out tasks, such as mining and chopping down trees (press enter once to start making the size of area you want to mine and such), press p for a stock pile and choose either mining or wood or whatever, this will tell your dwarfs where to put stuff. Firstly youll be wanting to build a a carpenters workshop, masons workshop and mechanics workshop, you can get to these from b (build) then w for workshops. Rooms should really be no bigger than 6x6 or else they will collapse. try doing this and the rest should come naturally although build a working farm is hard which is what you should have aimed to do by around autumn. check out the page it will help a lotLast edited by erhgiez; 10-10-2006, 14:29.

Yeah it is.
In fact I really like those "funny colored squiggly shapes" (too bad they'll use real grafics sooner or later, as stated by the developers).
I'm just not comfortable with the hideous amount of key-functions and menus (I'm also not too keen on Space Sims, where every key on your keyboard is mapped with ten different functions).
So, I think I'll just hope that they'll eventually implement mousesupport or an ingame tutorial in a later version.
Btw anyone who has the sparetime and dedication to leran this game, will shurely get a lot amount of fun out of it..Last edited by Ryo Saeba; 11-10-2006, 15:53.
