Mario RPG Remake - Super Nintendo Switch

Roughly 15 hours of playtime, I’ve just wrapped up Mario RPG on the Nintendo Switch, had an absolute blast! The game's charm and visual art style is top-notch, which is basically what I’m looking for from a remake like this. The option to switch between the remake audio and the classic SNES tunes is also a nice touch.

Visually it’s a night and day difference from the original. They have completely remade the game but kept the core gameplay exactly the same. My only gripe is there is the occasional slowdown in busy areas, but it only happens a handful of times.

Easily one of the Switch's standout releases in 2023. Which for me has been the best year for the system.

    Highly recommended

Have just started this, and am really enjoying it. It's gorgeous to look at, and those cut scenes, though pre-rendered, are particularly noteworthy and buttery smooth. The battle system is at a nice difficulty level where nothing is too challenging, but you do have to pay attention, and use your timing / reactions just enough that you're kept drawn in. Story's pretty standard fare but revels in that - you're never skipping through too much text, the exaggerated physical reactions to things in place of dialogue are charmingly daft, and you're moving at such a pace that it's hard to ever get bored.

That "15 hours of playtime" you've mentioned was exactly the sentiment I was hearing elsewhere that drew me to this, and it's absolutely nailing the brief of a nice little RPG romp.

Finished this now at around the 13 hour mark, and very happy with it. Didn't outstay its welcome, and on the difficulty front though it was never particularly tough, it wasn't totally braindead either. Enjoyed it a lot.

I spent some of last night mopping up things that Ive missed after losing to the final boss due to being underpowered. It would have definitely required Nintendo Power to find some of the things. (Casino, invisible path). That would be my only gripe (though part of the old school charm) and apart from that I love the game.

I love the squashed appearance of Mario in this (and the original). Only just realized this is a modest 12 or 15 hours and so I think I might break my usual avoidance of RPGs and dip into this one soon. Thanks for the impressions, all!
