Little Big Adventure: Twinsen’s Quest (NSW, PC, PS5, Xbox)

I picked up the Switch version for its physical release (I don’t own a PS and Xbox isn’t getting a physical release).

Just started today and first impressions aren’t,,, great. To start with positives the graphical style I think works well. Having read a bit about the game in old Edge mags I thought at first it was a shame to lose some of the charm of the (then) cutting edge gouraud-shaded polygons, but in practice it looks pretty nice. the characters are charming to look at, the elephants in particular.

The frame rate I think does clip a little bit. Also, I am away at my parents playing on a small HD ready TV and it feels a little bit too far away, although this is a common complaint with modern games not accommodating smaller displays.

The game started off rather disconcerting. There are surprisingly frequent pauses for loading (considering this is a cart game) at which point the screen goes completely black for just a little too long for comfort. I have recently been playing some problematic wiiware stuff on my Wii and so I was half expecting the game to crash… you’ll be relieved to know it doesn’t. However I have come across a couple bugs in only 1 hour’s play. The character got stuck in a corner after crawling back through a tunnel. I had no choice but to re-load, thankfully the game gives this option (you can save at will as well as auto-save).

Weirdly the game doesn’t support d-pad in menus which confused me a bit cos that’s what I tend to reach for. A couple times also the controls have spontaneously stopped responding when walking/running.

What I was hoping is this game would be a full update. I tried to play the game last year on PS1 but just found it too dated. Unfortunately gameplay wise it’s pretty similar to the original. At the start of the game you’re asked to shoot some hoops (effectively) and you can choose 2 different ’arcs’ for the ball as well as the direction by rotating the right analogue stick. It feels a bit obtuse. The only thing that feels particularly modern is that you have analogue control, and I’m not having to hurt my thumbs pushing hard on the PS1’s d-pad!

They haven’t kept the different player states (e.g. sneak vs aggressive) but otherwise it is much the same as back in the day. The NPCs with guns are just as irritating as ever. It’s disturbingly easy to get thrown in jail. The white elephants shoot an inescapable white beam that act as handcuffs. The white beam bends around corners, so there’s no way to avoid it once it’s shot.

I’ll probably try a bit more with it but as it’s very irritating I may swap to more polished fare.
