So i've been playing this for the last 3 days or so and I must say Tony Hawk really is back to how it should be. Proper skill based challenges , spot challenges and a really nice career type mode.
No longer is it really stupid settings like a metal factory where you have to ' get the skate tapes ' , as most people have played it's a proper skate park / large open town affair.
You start off at the bottom and basically have to make your way up into the top 8. For some reason you get phonecalls from Jason Lee ( mallrats, my name is earl etc ) who advises you when there are pro's out and about doing demo's for the fans etc. It's actually pretty tough once you make your way to these demo's as normally it will show you a brief clip of where it is ( for example one was on the school roof ) then you have to work out how to get up there. Once you make it to the demo your job is normally to drum up some crowds by popping some combos etc and getting people 'psyched'. In a lot of these you'll also have to skate alongside the pro and keep the crowd 'pumped' for a couple of minutes performing all sorts of tricks etc.
There are nice little spot challenges like we saw in the demo where you fall into the nice slow mo type affair and there really are a LOT of these about. Normally marked by some spray paint on the floor advising ' grind / manual ' etc.. once you start to grind or manual from the marker you'll start the challenge which also has an end point marked out.. make it all the way and you get a boost up the rankings and so on.
In some cases you'll be recording for a new video or having a photo shoot in a local pool etc which really add to making it feel quite real at times.
With all these challenges there are 3 ranks. Amateur / Pro and SICK. These are linked to 3 individual moves requires so normally the Amateur move is quite basic but trying to hit the SICK combo/move is a real challenge. I spent about an hour yesterday trying to pull off 5 different moves in mid air using the slow mo before i touched down on the pavement to get the reward.
Also jumped on Live and had a free skate with a few yanks. Was actually really fun as we were all in the theme park grinding the rollercoaster and at one point were all taking it in turns to jump over a specific building, it felt pretty cool seeing a bunch of people stood there watching you clear it as you get the obligatory " dudde.. niiicce ! "
Really into this and am constantly changing up my characters clothes as when you get sponsors ( so far Etnies and Adio are mine I think ) you get free shoes/clothes/decks and so on.
Little shot I took of my dude in his current getup :

The game visually looks very nice .. textures are quite incredible in places but slightly basic in others. It's one of those games that looks a lot better moving.
There are occasions of slowdown now and then, normally i'm incredibly anal about slowdown but it really doesnt cause an issue so it's not all that bad.
