    Tony Hawks: Downhill Jam (Wii)

I know its taken a while to get my impressions up, this is because i am finding it hard to pull myself away from the game. While i have Zelda, Rayman, Red Steel, Wii Sports this game has been getting a good 90% of my wii play.

Where to begin with this one... First of all i want to address the reviews you may have been seeing on the net. I find them totally unfair, as this is a fantastic game, if it had been random Bobs skateboard game then it would have received great reviews. However with the having the Tony Hawks name people (reviewers) have expectations.

The controls are very easy to get right into the game.

You hold the wii mote horizontaly

    A - special
    1 - tricks/grind
    2 - crouch/jump
d pad when used with a or 1 changes your tricks
Shake - to recover or use a speed boost
rotate in air- spin in that direction

I am yet to have any problems with control, they have been thought about, also useing the wii mote i can feel changes depending on the boards, they do represent the stats well.

While the game is fast you always feel like your in control

The game (for me at least) still has the core feel of the Tony Hawks series even in this new setting. The objective in this game is to complete challenges in order to recieve experience points(The poins available also range in how difficult the level/challenge is) . When you get to the target score you level up (which opens a new set of challenges).

The challenges come in many forms, some of these will be familiar to Tony Hawks players and some will be new. The main challenges are:

Race- you have to finish in the top 3 to gain points, the higher the place the better the points score.

Trick - you will be given a gold, silver, and bronze score before starting the level and you have a set amount of time to get to the goal and to reach any of the pre set scores, if you do so you get the point on offer.

Time Attack - You have to skate through the gates to gain bonus time, how much time youi have at the end depends on how many points you get.

Beat your rival - You have to get to the bottom of the track before your rival, its basicly a 1 on 1 race

Takedown - In this event you have to skate down the track knocking down any random people you see, you have to hit a set amount to gain bronze silver or gold level, and again depending on how well you do results in how many points you gain.

In sure theres one more but i can't remember it (it only shows up once or maybe twice in 50 or so challenges).

The challenges take the form of Blockbusters syle grids so if you can't do one you can take another route and revist them later (to unlock all the challenges and gain all your experience points).

The challenges take part of sections of tracks, you have places like Rome, Edinburgh, LA etc.. i think in all theres about 7 or 8 places but it feels like so many more the way the game has been structures. Then you have the challenges that are top to bottom, meaning you have the play the whole track.

The multiplayer games are also very fun.

The only ones i have tried are the trick attack and get a head

Trick attack - This is standard do the best score before you finish the race.

Get a head - you have to stay in the lead and keep your head, a clock starts to count up how long your in the lead and its the person with the most time in the lead at the end of the race wins. As soon as you are knocked out of fist you lose the head on your skateboarder which is a cool little something

The soundtrack is standard Tony Hawks Rock / Emo selection about 40 tracks you can either play a boarders favourite 10 or make a custom playlist, however i would have liked to have seen a preview option as i can never remember the tracks i like.

Graphics would not look out of place on the Gamecube but hey its to be expected as the Wii is not about graphical might. I have experienced a slight split second slowdown if i boost in some busy areas but other than that everything runs smoothly even in 4 player.

This is a great little game which has not been given the chance is should have been because it trys something new, and personally i think the game pulls it off.

The game will last about 12 hours-15 hours in single player depending on how good you are and how complete you want to be, after that you can try to beat any scores and theres a very good multiplayer (which i am yet to fully explore) waiting.

If you can get over the fact this is not a traditional Tony Hawks game then its a very worthy addition to anybodys Wii collection.

Thanks for the impressions. I'm actually going to buy this when prices get little lower.

I thought i was at the end as i got a grid that was full of very hard challenges, but sure enough, after i leveled up, another 10 challenges awaited. At this rate theres going to be the good side of 80 challenges, maybe 100, at the end of the game.

However tonight i have had a couple of graphical glitches, both of which came on The Alps track. The first was my screen being covered over with an image of another rider. When this happened i left the track, but when i came back i got stuck in the side of a hill and had to exit the track. Gladly its all fixed now by the looks of it and i had been playing it for a good 4 hours.

Also remembered that the missing challenge is a grind challenge and they are dam hard.... Im not sure the one set in the shopping centre is possable.

        Hi all, first post...

Bought this last weekend when I got my Wii - massive Hawk fan (well, the games anyway) so just wanted something other than Zelda and Wii Sports.

Sorry, but I couldn't get into it - my main problem was the speed - if the game moved at the same pace as something like SSX (of which DJ is clearly influenced by) then you'd have a far greater sense of connection with the controls.

As it stands, it's just too fast and only gets faster as you progress. Got to about the 5th tier and took it back - had no trouble getting golds but that was mainly because holding down crouch and doing the odd grind was enough for you to be channelled down the tracks at such speed that there was never any question as to whether you'd win or not.

Shame for my first post to be a negative - loved the graphics and the idea was sound, but it's just at about twice the speed it should be. Slower, with a greater balance of tricks and it would have been killer.

That just backs up everything i said in my first paragraph.

The game is a racing game at heart NOT a standard Tony Hawks affair, if you are looking for that, then Project 8 is the way to go. Or why not track down some of the old Gamecube Hawk games.

The game would not work if it went at a slow speed, its a shame that all involved felt the need to use the Tony Hawks name as its clearly confusing people on what they are getting.

I think its cool. Its definately not a racing game and its definately not a usual Tony Hawks Game it kinda meets both half way, and if you have played any other TH game its kinda hard adjusting.

I gotta say i did'nt like it at all at first, i found the control nowhere near as good as Excite Truck and the tricks alot harder to pull off ( Grind + Flip on the same button ) than a normal TH game, even with the simplified controls.

But then i started to actually race on the Race courses and only do alot of tricks on trick courses, i was trying to trick waaaaaay to much on races and kept coming 3rd and 4th and could'nt figure out why.

Once i had started doing only what was needed on each course, the controls seemed to fall into place and everything started to work for me.

The music is excellent, graphics look great and once you settle in the whole thing feels completely natural.

The only bad point i have is the stupid little skits they have at the beginning of each course, espeicially when one of the girls said " OMG I WAS LIKE L.O.L! " i really really hate them.

Edit : Been using the Sd Card for Music in Excite Truck i definately wanna see this on future Tony Hawk Games!

I have only played my copy for about 20 minutes, and I really thought it was bobbins, even tho i was expecting a racer. It went on the "maybe I'll like it when I put more effort in one day" pile of games.

****ting hell what a great idea - GC Hawk3 was always my fav version (although xbox had extra course did it not ?) - I may just pick that up for my wii wonder if the classic controller would work with it ?

No confusion here, I knew exactly what the game was, but felt that it's all far too random to warrant any substantial investment in time. It was too easy to grind the one rail line all the way from top to bottom, which seemed to win races and trick attacks.

Up the difficultly and lower the speed for DJ2, and you've got one buyer at least!

You need to progress further, it does take some getting use to. While you can maybe grind one rail from top to bottom to begin with that is surely not the case with the later levels. Also the difficulty does shoot up. Like any game it has to start off at a show and steady pace getting the players use to everything you need to learn, to progress through the later levels.

Im just puzzled as to why some don't like the game. The majority seam to say its just not what i was expecting, but in my opinion that does not make it a bad game.

I'm sure you're right about the later levels, but I personally would have preferred a trickier start (no pun intended) and a gradual increase from there, which to me would have meant a slower speed.

                      Just my opinion, of course.

I didn't (don't) dislike it, just couldn't appreciate it, perhaps.

Yeah, i hear what your saying. Though i do stand by my comments and even if im the only one will still say its an excellent game with a great use of the Wiis controls to good effect.

If only it had not been a Tony Hawk game.... So many more of you would have enjoyed it.

been playing this loads over xmas with my son.

hits the spot exactly for me in so far as its a more 'casual' easier to pick up kind of game, I just can't be bothered with any of the Hawk games for years as the combos and links seems like too much hard work and I can't be bothered with them.

I'm loving the pick up and play feel of this and the controls feel great as I really feel I'm balancing the rider on the board, which is kind of the aim of anything claiming to be a skating game.

maybe not a full price ?40 game but got loads of playtime in it for me.

Just finished this, theres a good solid 20+ hours gameplay in it on the single player front, as well as some great multiplayer games.

The final boss is very hard as he is on boost the whole level you have to know your shortcuts in order to beat him.

This is a fantastic game and perfect showcase of the Wii, the game does have the odd graphical glitch but all in all SSX Blur is going to have a lot to live upto.
