    Luminous Arc [DS]

An other turn-based strategy game, this time from Marvelous Interactive, which will soon be ported in the States by Atlus. Reason for importing was pretty simple: had no news on a possible translation and the game looked like it was worth a try.

However, once popped in the cart into the DS and watched the animated intro (decently done but far too compressed...pixels are large and almost unbearable), I realized that the language barrier would prevent me from doing almost anything: aside for a few menu titles it's all in japanese, texts and voices alike.

The first missions are very easy, and if you have any experience with any turn-based strategy game it will be easy to figure out how to move your units and issue attack order or use healing items. The UI uses the touch screen for everything and to display the battlefield, while the top screen shows datas on terrain, monsters, characters or items.

Graphics are very FFTA-like, just sharper, more brilliant and somewhat less plain. Character portraits are wonderful, but after getting used to Grim Grimoire, returning to static busts with a couple of expressions is kinda harsh - however there is a lot of dubbing and it's good - both acting and compression.

The game right now feels a bit shallow. There's no real distinction between the first four characters you get in the beginning and essentially is all about ganging up on an enemy until it's dead - maps feature various heights (measured in tiles, just like Disgaea) and magic has an impressive rock-paper-scissor structure with seven magic schools intertwined with weaknesses and affinities, but I guess I'm too early to see any of this...or even understand, sometimes the game is just cryptic and it feels there are a lot of secondary rules just like in Yggdra Union - however there were english tutorials in that game.

From what I've gathered from the manual there's also a way to mix weapons and items as well as a Fire Emblem-esque love theater between characters, and various ways to unlock special moves, which is something I'm really looking forward to. Wi-fi connection sounds promising too, I hope I will actually find someone to play with.

I was able to spend a couple of hours with the American build.
Every spoken line has been dubbed in english, with no option for jap or eng sound...I guess it's due to DS cart size. The dubbing itself is slightly on the bad side, most characters sound a bit older than they should be and some female voices are a bit above the line...standard issues with most american redubbings.

I don't know if it's my DS Lite acting up but sometimes the game completely screws up where you have touched the bottom screen, fortunately only during the intermissions, battles are fine. Compared to the jap version touching around the battlefield feels more "stiff", like the touchscreen is not as responsive as it should be. I'll try on a friend DS when I'll be able to confirm this issue.

The game itself is exactly the same, with no changes at all: it's standard fare, it plays exactly like FFT: ganging on a single enemy until is death and then continue forward - there's barely any strategy involved except where to move archers and mages to attack enemies from a distance without getting hurt.

As a whole it's a bit better than Hoshigami Remix but still has its flaws, for example the low camera angle which makes extremely difficult to target overlapping enemies...it's tapping around until you hit any (if any) pixel not overlapping with an other sprite.

After unlocking certain abilities the game gets more enjoyable and customizable, but it's not an excellent game...if you really are desperate for a SRPG or a fan of the genre you should go with it, but be ready to accept several shortcomings.

You can change to d-pad and buttons to get around any touch-screen problems - I found that much easier.

Took me a while to get this but the wait for Chrono Trigger and the next DQ made me try to find something to fill in the gap. Picked it up for a tenner used

Initial impressions; like the character designs and the dialogue is quite fun. Looks like the story will be a cliched evil church one so far.

Battle system doesn't have a huge amount of depth so far but it's reasonable enough for a strategy RPG. The stylus controls are horrible to I switched to d-pad. There's a general lack of polish when it comes to the interface though. You can't directly equip characters when buying gear, there are random odd pauses when going through dialogue that cause button mashing to speed things along.

Also lost 45minutes of gameplay due to a horrible "for no reason, you must fight me" where the strongest character fights one on one with your character (and is always a level above you). Losing results in a game over and if you haven't got the best possible equiptment at that stage and done a slight bit of grinding, you stand no chance. Likewise if you're unlucky and get a miss, you'll die. Hope that isn't an indicator for horrible game design throughout the game.

Only early in and it looks to be a fairly average RPG notable mostly for the artwork. Will stick with it though.
