    Big Brain Academy (Wii)

I couldn't find a thread on this already, so i apologize if i missed it.

Got the PAL version yesterday and there is something instantly appealing about Big Brain Academy… It doesn’t hide the fact it is visually quite a simplistic title, but it seems to take pride in its charm and ’warm’ presentation. The little professor fella (with a cute hat) introduces you to the Academy and everything is welcomingly straightforward: First you must Enrol you character (which, akin to Wii Sports, utilizes the wonderfully charismatic Mii characters to great effort) and then you are ready to test your brain…

There are 15 main activities to master, all of which are divided into the following five categories: Identify, Memorise, Analyse, Computer and Visualise. It is possible to practise each activity individually or take a test that combines all categories providing an all-round score. Your score is the weight of your brain. The higher the weight the bigger the brain. Here, bigger is better.

The results are destined by how quickly the correct answers are chosen and then a grade is given to reflect the weight of your brain. Also a chart is presented that looks almost identical to the Wii fitness chart found in Wii Sports. It is all very satisfying and pleasantly portrayed…

The only true goal here is to aspire perfection… There are a limited number of activities to choose (which, so far, I fear will strongly hinder the games‘ longevity) but each has its Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty settings and believe me… some of these really are bloody hard. Bronze, Silver and Gold awards are waiting to be won by those determined enough to seek them, and meanwhile there is something very satisfying and self-fulfilling about improving your own brain weight. There really is a sense of progression as you watch yourself make sense of something that previously appeared senseless.

Like Wario Ware though, at heart Big Brain is obviously meant for two or more people. I was up until 2am this morning competing against the misses. There are three main group games to play (Mind Sprint, Mental Marathon and Brain Quiz) and potentially these offer an almost endless mulitplayer experience that literally everyone can enjoy.

For those of you with little ones, some of these games are absolutely brilliant for teaching the youngsters to concentrate and focus their minds. My misses' daughter Chloe is five and together this morning she was having a great time recognizing shapes, identifying numbers and shouting out animals' names as their blurry form morphed into view.

How this compares to the DS titles I can’t say I’m afraid, but, as far as I can tell, this is another refreshing title that helps to bridge the gap between the player and the non-player. It obviously isn’t for those desiring a long epic experience… but that goes without saying. Definitely worth a look.

    Edit:

    Here's a little video review.

Sounds like Nintendo have probably struck retail gold again with this one - I can see a lot of the wii-sporters who didn't bother with the more videogame-like titles launched since absolutely lapping this up.

Out officially ? I really fancy it - Any online scoreboards or suchlike ???

I've got the US version of this for Mrs. Fistman's birthday next week - glad to hear it's not crap as I has my concerns, I must say! She's got Brain Academy for the DS but didn't bother with it as much as Brain Training, but I reckon she'll be into this one!

Although I don't know if her stealing the telly for games is a good thing or a bad thing...

You got another telly you can axe-grind on whilst she's doing it ? If not, buy her a 14" portable CRT for brain academy purposes

I found the DS version rather...overly-simplistic compared to Brain Training...anyone who has both that can compare?

I don't mate - I'm always buying new TVs (always want bigger and better! Heh) but I always sell the old ones to mates or blokes down the pub, so I've only ever got one in the house. Might have to change that if it looks like there might be a hostile takeover.

We've got two spare bedrooms in our house though - one is a study and one has a couple of sofas, a fridge, my (real, not GHII) guitars/basses and amps. Might just get an extra telly to stick in there eh?

Well I found Big Brain Academy to be very very childlike in its simplicity whereas I found Brain Training to be more adult orientated. I've just ordered Big Brain on Wii to be honest.

I found Big Brain very very easy, that's the main thing that made me stop playing it. However, I'm sure the missus and I would love playing a Wii version together.

Also, Brain Training came with a SUPERB (as yet unmatched) version of sudoku which my missus still plays almost every day.

My mum wants this, Nintendo really are reaching out to a larger demographic now.

Are the multiplayer modes concurrent or do you take turns? Need to know if I need to get some more Wiimotes for this.

You can have up to eight people sharing one remote, but also play split screen games with two people and two remotes (tho you may be able to have a split screen of 4, i'm not sure). The ’Sprint Mode’ is really good fun - this is basically where the players must complete their tests the quickest to get to the end. Trying to focus on what you're dong whilst being aware of your partner's progression makes things very tense...

You can play this mode by yourself too, which is a nice little bonus. You can choose to race against another player’s records, meaning you can go against their statistics when he or she isn't around.

Very limited sadly... But not completely wasted.

As far as i can tell so far, it is simply to share your records with your established "Wii Friends".

Although, thankfully this means you can also compete against their records in Sprint Mode, which is good news... Although, even if that is better then playing against the computer, it still cant compare to playing against a person live. Still, not too bad.

i got this Friday after finding the DS version enjoyable, this version is more of the same.

The opinions of the game have already been stated in previous posts so i want to just concentrate on the fact this is great as a budget game. At £40 i would have felt robbed as it is a pick up an play for 20 mins or so game each day, if you are playing mainly 1 player, but at £18 i feel much more happy with what i got for my money.

As stated the game has limited online functions of comparing Wii Friends scores with your own.

I am more than happy with the game for the price i have bought many £40 games that have not been as fun and engrosing for the 20 minutes or so each day i play.

I got this today...I think it's marginally better than the DS version really which was fun but very simple and fairly limited and short, but it is what it is and for £17 (shopto) I'm not complaining at all. It may seem strange to call a "brain training" game "short" but it is, you will get bored of it eventually but I think it might be a keeper because you'll turn it on now and again to have a blast. Multiplayer looks like where the fun is at though, like most Wii games.

I'd compare it to WarioWare actually, don't expect it to last you long, but it's great fun while it does.

Short bursts of fun is what this is. I wouldn't pay more than £20 for it though.

Definitely one of the better Wii games of late in my opinion, though like most (I said most!!) of them it's pretty short.

It's literally the DS game on the Wii, but I'm sure that's obvious and nobody would be ordering thinking it some massive departure. It works, it's fun, thats it really.
