    Folklore - Demo on PSN

Surprised there isn't a thread for this game here yet.

Folklore is a title by an in-house sony japan studio, or 2nd party, but supported a lot by sony anyhow. A fantasy action-rpg that is a bit more fairytale than fantasy, more grimm than tolkien.

the demo has two parts: you can play either a boy or a girl, each showing a different world, enemies and skills to collect. it'll take a half and hour orso per character, maybe a little less to get to the boss of the section and do the (pretty traditional, but still nicely done) big ending battle.

the game actually reminds me a lot of phantom dust a jap only xbox action game by sega that had amazing graphics for the xbox1 in that you don't actually attack yourself but collect skills(folks in this game) bind them to one of the 4 action buttons(x,square, triangle, circle) and use them by pressing that corresponding button. at any moment during the game you can press pauze and change the setup. it reminded me of the fps oddworld game a bit too: stranger. i don't know why, but it just had a similair feel to it (not the humor really, but i guess the different attacks you can do and that each attack has a little personality because it's actually a character in the game)

some folks are combo orientated, some attack an area, some are very heavy and slow, others crush the opponants guard, etc etc. so theres a lot of combinations to make with the various folks. you can level each folk up by killing the folk of that type and sucking up it's soul.

sucking souls is really cool: you attack an enemy untill it's dizzy. it's soul will stick out and you can press R1 to lock onti this soul, using the sixaxis movement you make a quick pull movement towards you, pulling the soul out of the enemy and devouring it. pull more souls at the same time gives you a better exp bonus multiplier but enemies will only be dizzy for a short period, so you need to find the right situation to get a good multiplier.

graphically the game can be a bit of a mixed bag: sometimes it looks like a very nice xbox1 title, other times it has such a magical atmosphere and everything works so well together. character designs and presentation of the hud and menus are also very nicely done and work very well visually.

it's a great demo, really worth the download and for me it is one of the rays of light starting to shine in the horizon for the ps3 that the future may still be a bright one for the console(not that i'm doubting it, but the console doesn't have a stable line-up atm that a high quality console should have.)
