    That's a good point, I'll try that.

But Coop feels like "Versus" to me.

I'm just not big into the agression!*

*Unless it's AI and I have a rocket launcher.

I will try it out though. I have to setup a coop room that doesn't get hijacked first, it's all tricky for a Halo noob!

EDIT: VP, I'm too old an boring for all this in your face fragging mate.

With Co-op, is there a respawn timer, or do you just respawn immediately...on Halo 2 I think you only spawned if it was safe to do so, and you spawned next to your mate.

          Same as H3 then.

But you can just retreat and 99% of the time your mate spawns.

          4 player was no challange.

3 player was a bit harder.

Maybe 2 player coop is the way forward? I'll try that tonight.

Same thing in Halo 3, you respawn next to the player closest to the action but not actually in it.

I played this loads at a lan party at the weekend. Completed it on Legendary in co-op and played the multiplayer loads. The new maps are fantastic and the theatre mode is just jaw dropping.

            GOTY so far for me.

There is a skull that means if one of you die you both get booted back to the last checkpoint. I unlocked a silver skull last night, and i think i know why rareware are in the credits

I'm a massive FPS fan, played most of the PC, havent really found a great one on it since Half Life 2... which conicidently you probabaly wont like anymore i guess becuase its on the 360 soon so will no longer have intresting gameplay, even though its the exact same game.

To be honest I think Halo 3 has some of the best general gameplay, A.I. and atmosphere ever seen in a FPS, no matter what platform you talk about. And as a whole package its just a pretty damn brilliant game

I'm not really sure how you compare it to the bland looking, very linear environments and dumb AI of Quake to be honest.
My point was that I was enquiring as to whether the people feeling a bit flat about the game were longtime PC gamers. Its easier to be very impressed with the Halo series if it was your first introduction to FPS gaming. I would certainly be a lot more blown away with Halo if I had not played the genre for many years on the PC.

I consider myself a gamer. I couldn't really give a toss what platform a game is on. If its a good game, thats all that matters so I'm not sure what being similar to a PC Zone writer has to do with it. Its pretty logical that seeing as the PC is the machine for FPS's, and console FPS's are still relatively new, comparisons are made.

The game as a package is amazing, especially for a Halo fan. I just think for myself, the single player was very uninspiring in comparison to games I have played before with really only the middle 3 levels shining through.

I played a fair bit of CTF, Territories etc over the weekend and had some fun. Again though, its nothing that games like Unreal Tournament haven't been doing for years. Yes, the front end and options are amazing, but when push comes to shove and you get into the game itself, I guess I was expecting more of an experience than what I had had many years ago.

Your comments on Quake strike me as strange. At the time Quake revolutionised multi-player gaming. The gameplay was absolutely pure. Halo 3's impact for console gaming is huge, but imo its not for FPS gaming as a whole.

I played FPS on PCs long before I played them on consoles and the Halo games wipe the floor with most PC FPS. The combat mechanics are just simply the best there is, regardless of platform.

I like the way that you get choke points and firefights in H3. They are really fun on Coop.

Looking forward to those on hard with spawns off.

There is a big scope for tactics in SP, but respawning can remove that from the Coop.

Good to get the advice on skulls here. Excellent.

We disagreed on this point before and you never satisfactorily answered it. Halo's impact was huge all round. The way all games (PC FPS included) have introduced stuff like the rechargable shield and the always available melee attack (to be used as an actual tactic, not just a humiliation technic) is all down to Halo.

finished it on Legendary (co-op) this morning .... best game ever ? ... IMO it's up there together with Halo CE !
can't wait to start over again, what a brilliant game this is ! it's great from start to finish, not a dull moment in there, the music and graphics (style) is amazing.

                        ****ing amazing game !

                        love Bungie

You'll have to elaborate on that. The mechanics to me appear very similar to Unreal Tourny as mentioned earlier. While playing CTF and some Slayer I could quite easily have been playing the older game. There seem to be far too many weapons that do similar things or are very very situational as well. To many types of grenades. It all dilutes the gameplay imo.

You can't call a regenerating shield and a melee attack as huge leap.

The shield I personally don't like as it feels cheap. With the quick respawns do you really need a way of regenerating your health anyway? Health packs also meant you had to learn the level more and created more edge of the seat moments as you couldn't just hide for a few seconds to regain all of your health. The shield feels a bit of a dumbing down to make it more accessable.

The melee attack is a good implementation but the weapons leave a lot to be desired when you compared to Quakes weapons which while a lot less, were useful in more situations. You also of course had the chainsaw, a melee weapon.

agree, it wasn't wise from Bungie to bring in 2 more or less useless grenade types and other stuff. but Halo and Halo 2 had only 2 types of grenades and only useful weapons.

despite of Halo 3's somewhat watered down gameplay it's still better than any other non-Halo FPS, regardless of platform. the blend of gameplay mechanics, AI and variety of enemies, surroundings and combat situations is just outstanding.

how to explain someone the magic of Halo? is it even possible? guess it's either you love Halo or not. however, i think what sets Halo's "mechanics" apart from any other good FPS is the level of satisfaction you gain from the pure combat. also enemies are no soulless objects, seem more or less intelligent and adapt to your playstyle. it takes some effort and skill to overcome your enemies on Legendary.

Beard, read his words. Just because you don't like the regenerating shield doesn't disprove a thing - it's still something that has been adopted by other games after Halo. And the chainsaw example again doesn't disprove a thing. He said the "always available" melee attack.
