*Swallow, not reading game manuals since 1997*

A lazy solution at best, can no-one else see this is one of the most important areas to improve in game narrative? Or am I mad?

Motivation is the most important artistic characteristic in any media, Halo 3 fails enormously on this point.
When I go to watch a film with a number in the title I don't expect to have the previous series jigged out to me. I have the sense to know it's part of a trilogy/story, the 3 gives it away, so get the background myself.

Likewise I don't expect to have a precis of the Harry Potter series in the whatsisname Hallows.

It's an action, blockbuster-y game designed to appeal to the 15-25 year old American college male gung-ho demographic. There are more slower paced, cerebral first-person shooters already out and due later on this year.

Did the Matrix sequels and Return of the King really cater to people who hadn't watched earlier films? You could still see them and admire the production design and the general drama, but you can do that in Halo 3. Most people playing the game don't give a crap about the setting and the story - they're there for the gameplay and the action.

I rewatached, and posted links to youtubed versions of all of the cutscenes from the first two, so anyone could of easily caught up with the story. The beginning of 3 ties in nicely with the end of two, with the exception of Johnson and Keys beating Chief to Earth, however I understand this is explained at the end.

Not sure how, I knew nothing about Halo at all, yet I LOVED Halo 3 and it's motivated me to find out more about the series, I may even attempt to finish Halo 2 now!

dam, its a huge shame about the graphics, you would have thought with the time and power availible they would have made somthing special, still looks great, but afterplaying metriod prime 3, i think metriods graphics are nicer and the frame rate much better,

anyway halo 3will be played for years to come, online is really quite special
just 2 small Qs, atm can you only play big team battles in non ranked games?

has anyone got the official guide? i dont need it for single player, but online mode tips and stuff, if it worth getting?

Quite - previous installments are easily available for most popular media.

Try to discover the build-up to Halo 3, and you're faced with finding a second hand copy (which I think is atrocious, the BIGGEST SELLING EVER!!!1 game not being readily available as new) and then a ten hour slog throuh it. I'd bet most people wouldn't bother. So, this leaves the gamer, new to the Xbox brand, seeing all his friends playing Halo 3, deciding to have a go, being completely baffled by it. It's practically as user-unfriendly as anything else Microsoft branded...

                  just have to say

holy **** at the part where the dawn comes into land, the scale is mindblowing!! seriously floored me that part

I wasn't baffled by it...it's fairly straight forward and obvious.

The only parts I didn't understand were how
                    was "captured"...

Or read the countless "previously on Twin Peaks" summations found across an insane number of websites, magazines etc etc........Really, it's not difficult to find out about the series.

Said gamer could even ask his Halo 3 playing mates for a summation......

But before you saw Return of the King, you could easily, in any number of ways, find out about the previous films (or book, if you're that way inclined). Return of the King works far better as a stand-alone piec in it's context than Halo 3 does.

This is my point - the media are different, there has to be effort made to provoke empathy and motivation towards the avatar.

I've never seen an Metal Gear Solid game give me a recap on the story , or any of the Half Life games or episodes.

I'm not saying I don't understand what's happening. I have played Halo 1 & 2. It doesn't change the fact there is absolutely zero effort made to present you with some idea of what your motivation should be whilst playing the game.

I'm not laying the blame purely at Bungie's door, this is just where my thoughts have led. We clearly need a PoP-style revolution in game story-telling.

Not in the intended way - ie, actually playing the previous games.

                                Triple post madness! Sozzles all!
