Is it the second difficulty you're on? Yeah, there's some hard ones in there, I think they feel harder because they're at odds with most of the rest of the puzzles which aren't so bad, it really ramps up later though - everything's hard!

You'll probably experience taking hours over an easy puzzle a lot more, though. The game is designed to encourage it, I think!

I've done the first set where you could press R if you wanted to and, after a very long time I've done the next difficulty after that. I'm now stuck on the next difficulty, on one level in the cake section. Very, very frustrating, something to do with three rows of floating blocks and pushing the coloured blocks on to them from above. I even found myself thinking of the solution whilst trying to get to sleep.

This is fast becoming my most played DS game.

Oh right, so after I finish the 2nd set there's another set that appears? Even harder? heheh.

After a bit of a break (reading books), I'm back on this. I'm half way through the 2nd difficulty level and finding it a lot easier after my break for some reason. Even though the puzzles some totally deviant, I'm "seeing" my way through fairly easily in many cases. I'm restricting myself to one per night though, because I want to keep up the book reading which has slipped in recent years, so I'll be playing this for a while yet!

Did anyone ever work out what hiking mode did?

I've gone back to this. It appeared in my mind from nowhere a few weeks ago but I was playing Retro Game Challenge. With that finished I think it's about time to play it again because as soon as it's in my thoughts I have to play it or it just won't let up. Or at least, the plan was to play it again, but on turning it on I realised that there's only one save file, so to play through it again from scratch I need to delete my completed file: not ready to do that!

Which left hiking mode. I've completed 15 puzzles in it now: still nothing! I still bloody love this game though, and I'm enjoying hiking mode anyway

So, how's everyone's progress? Where did everyone stop? Did anyone ever get far into the third difficulty?

I got 3/4 way through the 2nd and then needed to play other things. I will go back though.

Don't say that as if there are better games than this

35 hiking mode puzzles done now, again, still nothing. I'm beginning to think that there are indeed twelve different puzzles hidden in the mode waiting to be found, and that's where the sharing of data with friends comes in. There's no data sharing option so it must need you to get the details of the specific level from your friend and play it yourself.

Everyone into hiking mode! A prize for the first person to find a level that isn't of the normal hiking mode type, or solve a level that makes something appear!

                (there's not really a prize)

Fifty hiking mode puzzles solved now and...

                  Guys, a breakthrough!

I unlocked that when I solved the following puzzle

I got a little message on the screen but it went too fast so I couldn't take a photo of it so I've no idea what it said.

Problem is, that was exactly my fiftieth puzzle, so now I'm not sure if I unlocked the new puzzle for solving 50 (seems most likely) or whether I stumbled upon a puzzle that was set to reward me.

Can someone with the game go into hiking mode and solve that exact puzzle (if that image isn't clear enough, I'll take a better one) and tell me what happens? Be ready with a camera if you can, if it unlocks the puzzle for you you'll get the same message I got which appears as soon as the last block disappears, and you'll have about three seconds to snap it!

                  Finally, progress!

There are still no new options to share data, though. I solved the new puzzle too and still nothing...

Thanks to whoever gets this puzzle solved fastest!

Hi, Matt. Thanks for emailing me, most appreciated.
Have just done that level on Hiking and can confirm that it opens up that special level.
I haven't played the game for a long time, still haven't done Hard 1-7 but will be back on this I think.
Given that there are seemingly 20x8x20=3200 levels, to find 12 in them to unlock those stages is quite a tall order. I have only done 4 of these levels, definitely not 50, so can confirm that there seem to be 12 special stages.

Heh, no problem. I noticed you hadn't logged in for a while so I figured you wouldn't notice this unless I pointed you in the right direction!

So, the special level unlocked? That is interesting indeed. I guess that's this mode figured out, now! Finding the magic 12 amongst 3200 is going to be quite a job (though it could be that there's more than 12 puzzles that unlock bonus ones, in actuality). At least it only takes one person to find a puzzle and post the details here to get it opened for everyone. And at least we now know the trick to this mode, and what it means by sharing details!

I wonder what happens if you solve all 12 hidden puzzles... I'd expect some kind of cash prize for the effort you'd have to put in!

Come on, ntsc-uk. Between us all we can do this!

I'm on my own, aren't I? This is going to take some time...

I'll have a bash at the hiking levels as Hard 1-7 is still eating my mind. It's the one with suspended platforms and 2 sets of normal blocks. Feels like I have almost all the right moves but am missing one important step. It makes me swear.

The one with the bomb surrounded by sealed up blocks? I'll have a go at that now. I won't tell you the answer, but I'll have a go

I can't remember what bombs do!

We just need people to keep playing hiking mode. It's actually a lot more fun than I gave it credit for before. Eventually we'll come across all 12 if we post here whenever we find one.

Nope it's not that one, it's the one on the 2nd difficulty. That's how long it's been since I played it.
I agree, hiking mode is good coz you sort of know what you're going to get. Then it stands in a corner laughing at you until you solve it.
Who'd have thought blocks and cake and telephones and teenage girls could be so fun?

I just played that and solved it on my first attempt

I actually remember the puzzle layout quite well, though, so it must have given me a ton of grief first time around

I'll attack it on the train tomorrow. At least there's hiking to do if it won't let me win.
