Ugh, I don't know what to make of this having completed it. It's a solid shooting engine (You'd expect nothing less from FRD) with nothing more than functional graphics (The HDR effect as you come out into the open is rather nice though).

The problem for me is the narrative. Not necessarily the story itself, which is decent enough, but the fact that they're CONSTANTLY hitting you over the head with it.

I fully believe that the behaviour of the Mantel troops in the beginning is to make you hate them - that works without a doubt. But they don't need to make it so in your face, I really think they've underestimated their audience (Or maybe they took note of Harvey Smith getting pissed that nobody got how 'subversive' Blacksite was and wanted to avoid it? ).

Then the side switch happens, you're introduced to probably the only half decent character in the game

    (Merino)

. And shortly afterwards you're thrust back into the same squad scenario just with South American accents shouting the same 10 comments over and over and over...

The squad AI is truly awful. They're constantly running in front of you, pushing you into the open when you're trying to pop out of cover (Which would be so much easier if there were a cover system) - I've downed my own squad mates more times than I care to remember. This is all, of course, when they're capable of keeping up properly rather than falling behind and just spawning in around you accompanied by a 'squad catching up' message.

The driving sections are too long (More than one second) and there are too many of them (More than none), the handling is really poor.

And there's a ridiculous cut scene

right before the final assault where Merino tells you that he's going to use the drug himself, but it's fine because he's different. You question him... and then do what he ****ing says anyway without so much as an argument.

    AND they make the final

'boss', fitting as the encounter may be, unnaturally powerful despite no special augmentation, which I hate in games.

The one overwhelming positive though is that it's over now and I can start Portal.

I picked this up today after quite enjoying the demo. I dont know what it is, maybe ive been spoiled by the visuals of MGS4 or the lovely greenery in Uncharted, but this looks to me like a tarted up PS2 game.

I know its not all about the graphics, but its as if im playing gears of War and its doing that thing when the textures havent loaded yet. (which happens occasionally on my copy, i think a few people have experienced this)

The textures look very low-res to me for example one of my squadmate's faces during a cut scene looked horrific, like someone had painted him in!

The gameplay itself isn't TOO bad. Its pretty generic i find, and the Nectar system is a bit strange.

Im sure ill get used to it though.

What are the servers like online?

The difference between the texture quality of the rebel leader when you first meet him and the cutscene that follows is laughable. How Ubisoft allowed this out the door I don't know, it can't have done FRD's reputation any good. However, I'm finding the action ok so far so I will no doubt persevre until the end.

You should persevre as the end is the best bit. When you finally know this crap is over and talk about an ending jesus

This game got hyped a lot by one of the main guys at FR. He did some videos - sort of tongue-in-cheek stuff, to promote the game. He must have permanent egg on his face now.

I can't believe that a dev could hype something soooo much - and it turns out to be sooo weak. They are professionals - they knew it was a dodgy game.

The magazines are guilty, too. Always hyping stuff like this. It's been the same since gaming began. You'd think lessons would be learnt.

Finished it. Didn't really enjoy the last level, there was some shocking level design. You know it's bad when the designers have to highlight where you need to go with flares because the compass indicator isn't enough. There were sections I did enjoy, such as the
, but overall the negative points drag it down to below average. What was with the sound too? I've not hear so many repetive looped samples since the 16bit days. My fave was when you get set of fire and you're treated to a 2 second scream loop...that doesn't get annoying quickly.
