Excellent, definite purchase for me now

Yeah im pretty sure you can, tho why you'd want to is debatable. In japan some of the voices were shocking imo.
And the cheesy yank versions with botched translations are?

Sorry but the only way to hear any form of dragonball game is with the original voices from the japanese cartoon.

I think its superb they have put them in. I had to wait for a colelctors edition to get them in budokai 3.

I'll pick this up eventually, not paying £30 quid for it.

Budokai Tenkaiichi 3 is still the best DBZ game out there still imo but the demo of this was decent.

Finishing the game at the end of Cell Games is a weird choice but i guess they are only doing it so they can do another game or 2 that will have a full story and character roster.

Question! Japanese Language on the pal version? If thats not there i'm buying it on jap for my PS3

Edit : just noticed above! this pleases me most! btw anyone who thinks the US voices are better than the Japanese ones, needs their heads looking at.

I like the eng dub, i think its cheesy great. Of course the original dub is better and more serious. Nothing wrong with it imo.

Watching my 13 yr old play this at the mo as it was bought for him and have to say this game looks and plays fantastic, loving all the drama cinematics but the speed and animation is outstanding and is definately one of those games that are not my type but you could watch all day long.

              That IS the full Dragonball Z character list of fighters. Anyone who comes after the Cell Games isn't from Dragonball Z, that's early GT. Ending it at the Cell Games is the ultimate jutsice you can give for any DBZ fanboy >_>;

And Tenkaichi 3 was made of failure and cupcakes. D: This is as good as it comes, close to the original Budokai formulae butvery much more polished off.

Shame there's no capsule option though. I always liked that in the Budokai's.

                ....

I personally loved the Buu stuff, i love Gotenks and Vegetto, i thought piccolo also rocked during these eps, why anyone would dismiss these eps is a mystery to me.

I don't know why anyone would think Tenkaichi 3 was a failure, i played it far longer than any of the Budokai games, the roster is fantastic, the game plays amazing and captures the DBZ style more than any other DBZ games.

They're dismissed because they're not DBZ. It's in the DBZ series, but they completely changed the storyteam and production teams for anything post-Cell Games, so it doesn't count as being DBZ =O

Wish they included some Dragonball characters though. The original series was funny as hell.

Toriyama did all the manga and thats what the anime is based on and thats enough for me, if its not Toriyama its not DB/Z. I don't care what they changed its still Toriyama.

Anyway forget turning this into a fanboy rant, back to the game.

I've played a fair few hours on this now and I have to say as a game it's pretty terrible. I can see DBZ lovers really liking it as it a great take on the show, but as a game it lets itself down very badly.

I'd start off with the melee part of the game being fairly pointless. There aren't many different melee attacks and far too many ways to counter melee. there's block, dodge and the firm favourite of teleport behind the guy hitting you and punch them int he back. They have put some things in to counter these options but they don't really work. Dodging fills up a fatigue meter, but very slowly, blocking takes chip damage, but the teleport seems to be pretty much at will with no down side. To stop an endless block in melee there arealso guard smash attacks but these are so slow they are pretty much irrelevent and anyone trying them can be poked easily enough while they charge.

To 'help' balance the game with melee being so pointless so often they have nicely made it so the ranged attacks do massive ammounts of damage, but they have made it so they are also easily avoidable. Again, there are multiple ways to negate a ranged attack with side steps, the teleport behind button which works the same for ranged as it does for melee and if in aura spark mode (which being in makes very little difference to game play) you get an additional teleport upto the guy far away from you option to boot.

There are ultimate attacks that will do roughly a whole energy bar worth of damage (you get between 3 and 6 or 7 energy bars worth of health) these can be used anytime your ki meter is full so you can use them several time in a fight, but don't let that put you off using a standard ranged attack that still does around 60% of a bar in damage, which compared to successfully landing a melee combo for 20%-30% of a bar seems like a much better idea.

You are forced to play on medium first time through (which I've not finished) but that is generally far too easy and makes the game a dull pointless button mash and super move extravaganza. I'd like to set the game to a challenging level but it just won't let me, which is pretty dissappointing. You can get a decent level of challenge on the survival mode, but not until you are at the very least 50 fights in, which'll take you around an hour or so to get there, and once you lose a match it's back to the start again which given the excessively powerfull nature of specials (you get 3 health bars here, so one special is a third of your health) can happen by accident easily enough if you aren't paying enough attention or are just a bit unlucky, and I'll cover the game's special ways of messing you up in a mo. When you do get it upto a decent challenge level, the computer (not tried it multiplayer or online, the single play left me not really bothered to) enteres some kind of uber defence mode, especially in melee where it starts to just block everything. a few more matches and a slightly higher difficulty sees every melee attack being punished with a teleport and a slap in the back of the head. Very dull to play against. At this stage you will switch to an almost exclusively ranged attack mode as it tends to be safer and gives far more damage than melee anyway so range always gives much better risk Vs. reward, even when every attack isn't being blocked. The teleport dodge into back stab still works at range, but the computer seems to use it less at range so all is nice there. When hard or very hard modes would unlock (don't know not, finished the story or normal) my experience playing up to more challenging opponents doesn't make me feel there would be a more engaging play experience when you get there. I got to 63 wins on survival at which stage I whiffed three supers in a row when cut scenes interupted my attacks and I found myself back at super easy fights again. I didn't play the survival mode a second time...

You also get support characters that will jump in when certain conditions are met, typically when an energy bar is emptied, but not always. I think the energy bar triggered ones were added to stop someone dominating by breaking an onslaught worth of damage, but it is done so sloppily that it soon stops being funny. My advice would be if someone is near the end of an energy bar, don't use a big move as it will be interupted as soon as that health bar is empty and you'll have wasted damage. That isn't to say that is the only time they can trigger. I have noticed they typically trigger when you have set up for your super move, just before it hits or fires. this is brilliant as not only does it leave you ki meter empty, but you don't get the move either - yay! It's likely only my perception that they are timed to ruin your attacks, but they can happen so often and so randomly they make it very hard to plan an attack plan around them.

You'll get to see these interupt cut scenes a fair bit as you play the game, so it won't be long until you are sick of them, not only for making a mess of you carefully teed up special but also for being unskipable, which will make you doubly grumpy pretty quickly.

Also, there is no extra gameplay which dresses up the experience, such as in the Naruto with missions etc.. which leaves the third rate combat the only thing in there and that is very sad for it.

Lastly, the controls are a bit nasty and require you to learn their quirks. if you are dashing forwards and your ki meter has just filled, you can't just enter the super move command as all that will do is fire a weak, standard pewpew type fireball. What you have to do is end the dash first, then enter the command. Nice. I can't offer any advice on how to ensure a throw works for you, it seems to be entirely in the hands of the gods if that will work on any given attack or not. I've looked but not been able to spot if there is a system to it. Don't worry though, they do even less damage than a melee combo, so you might as well just stick to the ranged specials and supers whenever possible.

It's a shame as the game looks great but gets almost everything wrong from a gameplay stand point, and it's not like they haven't put in some half decent ideas to break things up and do something different. If the ideas they used to try and balance out game play had played out well it could have been a different story but as it stands it's a mess of ill implemented ideas and dull game play.

Melee isn't pointless at all, your just not playing it properly mate. As for Teleporting being random it totally isn't. You can decide when you want to teleport and if you want to do the back kick like you mentioned.

The Guard Breaking Crush attack works really well, especially if the enemy is guarding constantly. Sure its slow to use, which is for good reason as it would have been exploited. I tend to follow up with different combos after i do one. As for long range specials, you can use these during combos aswell. Its up to you when or where you want to use them. As for dodging them, they can be dodged at but its more a fault on you as a player if an opponent dodges it. Your timing is crucial you have to wait for the right moment to fully unleash them.

My god you're right, I feel a fool for not spot those points before! If I had said the teleporting is random or that ranged can't be timed beyond if a cut scene kicks in or not that is. Other than that the things I actually said I feel are still spot on.
