This reminds me of Pokemon Snap on the N64.
You ride along in a jeep on rails (you can speed up, but not stop) and try and spot animals, looking around with the nunchuk. However, instead of taking photos from the jeep, once you've spotted some, you jump and try and take photos close up. You gauge their scaredness and try get into position for a good shot before they run away because there's some loon in a beige safari outfit hanging round looking shifty.
I got a great shot of a giraffe eating from a tree whilst a zebra ran past.
I think it's meant to be fairly educational, because your robot (wtf???) jeep driver/guide natters away to you constantly in japanese, so I presume he's telling you about the animals you've just seen. Other than that, the menus are in a mix of english and japanese and it takes you through the main options tutorial style at the start so playing isn't tricky.
I fully expect to see some planet earth style animal takedowns soon.
You can save your fave pics after each jaunt to your photo album and spotting new animals adds them to the "catch em all" animal file. You can also send photos to friends.
The graphics are unexpectedly impressive at times, with densely populated undergrowth looking highly detailed and the vistas across the sparse areas of the island are very cool. The animation on the animals is top notch, especially when they are moving along. The animation when they are still is sometimes repetitive.
You also have to spot boxes for new photo reels and I presume later, I'll be able to power-up my jeep and item list
So far a very mellow experience. Not a gun in sight. Maybe there's a hunting mini-game
Lacking any japanese knowledge, it'll be interesting to see how much enjoyment I'll get out of just "exploring" and taking photos.
My son thought the giraffes were cool.
