    Disgaea DS

    This just arrived from VG+.

Having played the PS2 and PSP version a ridiculous amount of time I decided to see what the DS version was like. Everything is there from the Sony versions (that I have seen so far).

The music is a little simplified over the Sony offerings but instantly recognisable. You can adjust the menu options to single or double touch when using the stylus. There are also plenty of other options for the Battle screen. The options (Action, Menu etc.) appear as icons on the touch screen for easy selection. If you prefer you can always use the d-pad and buttons (they work the same way as the Sony versions). The animation on screen can be a little jerky at times (not a huge problem I suppose). After trying to move using the stylus I decided that the buttons and d-pad were a more accurate option, though that could be down to familiarity. The upper screen contains a map of the battle area when you are fighting which is very useful You have three save slots which should be adequate for most eventualities..

The game does work well on the DS and if you don't have the game on a portable and want it, then this is a good option.

I have yet to find the Prinny Commentary (which is supposed to be very funny) and will most probably go for a Game Over at the end of Chapter 1 so that I can do a New Game + and try out Pleinar.

I want to get this game in time for some travel next month, but I'm not sure whether to go for the PSP or DS version. The former seems really hard to find now, but the controls will be familiar and the screen is nice and large. The DS version looked a bit cramped with a smaller screen, but the batteries would last longer.

Any suggestion on which to get as you've played both? Also, are there any content differences?

    Thanks for first impressions!

I would say that the PSP version is the better looking of the two and the movement is smoother but that has no effect on the game play.

If anything the stats are easier to read on the DS. You do get the Prinny Commentary and the use of Pleinar on the DS version only. The overall map of the battlefield on the top screen of the DS is also useful. You have icons on the touch screen of the DS to zoom or rotate the view and also call up menus etc as applicable.

Using the buttons and d-pad for battle control there is not much between the two versions other than the OK and Cancel buttons being the other way round on the DS.

Having been putting a lot of time into Disgaea 3 on the PS3 I have only done the Tutorial and first map in the DS version to get a feel for the game (though knowing the game so well that is not really a problem with my impressions). I'll have to try to progress to New Game+ at the end of the first chapter and get Pleinar and see what I think then!

You can import the DS version for just over £20 including postage or the PSP version for around £25 including postage, both from VG+.

      Edit...
I do like the DS version the more I play it. Pleinair is a superb character. With a gun she is stronger at Level 1 than the other characters were (maybe down to the weapon I suppose). Definitely worth getting a Game Over after Chapter 1 (and sitting through a long set of credits).

        Thanks for the response!

Having done some hunting, I think I'll go for the PSP version. I just spotted the Asian release going on the Play Asia website for just over £8, and I can get it shipped to a friend I'll be visiting in Osaka shortly. It's criminal it got such a limited print in Europe, judging by the prices on Ebay at the moment.

Might save the DS version for the future. I hope they release the Disgaea 2 on the portables in the future - never tried that one.

Of the three Disgaea games, the second was the one I liked least. Having said that, I did play the Japanese version a fair amount. I also bought the American version to get the story and promptly lost interest.

A question for the Disgaea experienced, as I'm confused. I keep equipping items that say they have "+10HP" or something, and only getting a 4HP bonus, for example. What's that all about? :/

Are you sure they don't mean 10% or something? Or maybe it's a joke in the flavour text? XD

It's definately +10 to the stat, rather than %. I've decided that it's just that my character isn't supposed to equip that type of armor, or something, but I can't find anywhere the game tells you about that like it does for weapons!

In other news, I need to stop making "quick" trips into the item world when I should be going to sleep.

If I remember correctly your characters may have a % associated with their stats, so for example a fighter may get 110% = +11HP and a mage get 40% = +4 HP of the bonus for a +10HP item. Conversely the mage might get 120% = +12 for a +10int item.

These % are visible when you create a new character... and probably in the character stat screen somewhere (same page as weapon levels on ps2?)

Ah, of course. That makes sense, cheers!

Just got both Disgaea DS and Disgaea 3 in yesterday, only had a quick shot of the DS game thus far and it's definitely an excellent choice if you've not had a chance to play it yet. I've got a sneaking feeling I'll be reverting back to my psp version sooner rather than later though. Purely for the screen size I think.

It's odd how I've still went and bought all three iterations of Disgaea and even purchased the strategy guides for each aswell! Must be nuts.

Been playing for a little this afternoon but I want to ask, anyone fancy giving a brief 'How to get from low levels to ridiculous levels' guide? I find I'm wandering aimlessly in the item world levelling up what may amount to a useless weapon and amassing specialists with no long term goal in mind.

I want to see some ridiculous levels of damage and growth.

one of the cave of ordeals has a stage with lots of enemies bunched up on +xp squares. use area attacks to shoot up the levels and boost character types without area attacks finishing off the odd enemies.

There's also a stage with invincible squares that you can abuse to powerlevel (boost their level through the dark assembly, throw all the monsters together, chip away at their hp when invincible) but that's crossing the line into exploit territory

I've been farming my items for statisticians, they give you 1% extra exp per statistician on your character, up to 400%.
