It's well worth buying some bling as soon as you can to increase your style and your respect multiplier. Unlike the first game, style increases with everything you buy, not just what you wear, even cars and bikes. So you could buy a number of high performance cars and your multiplier will go through the roof, even if you trash the cars without putting them in the garage first.
There's loads to like about this game, even little things like if one person collects a CD in co-op, the other person gets it too.
I agree with the feelings towards GTA4, although I do think there was stuff to do, it's just that it was boring. I loved GTA4 during the story, but once that finished, only the hitman missions provided any fun. Shooting the pidgeons was a hideous grind, taking your friends out to the same place again and again was super dull and even the jumps didn't have the same pizazz as before. I traded it in, hoping that the DLC would bring more story or more wacky stuff to the mix.
I can see myself enjoying SR2 for longer, especially in co-op.
