Looking for some advice, never really got on with Street Fighter as Virtua Fighter was always my fighting game.

I've got this on order for the PS3 and I'm looking forward to getting it. I'm looking for recommendations on which fighters would perhaps be best for somebody who really doesn't know what they are doing to start learning?

I've got a couple of the official pads on the way to me if that makes any difference.

    Cheers.

I would imagine Street Fighter 2 (HDR) is the best option, this seems to share the most with that of all the others and it will certainly let you get to grips with the basics.

With that said, this has a challenge/tutorial mode, so why not just jump straight in with 4?

I'm currently stuck on Jumping heavy kick, crouching light punch,(link to), crouching heavy punch, heavy dragon punch, EX cancel, mid dragon punch, ultra!
As someone who knows the theory of cancelling but hasn't properly played a game using it until now, just as an example here, take me through the commands you would use to perform such a combo and details about any specific timing that is required in between any of them. That would help me to understand more about the specifics.

Which one of these two will walk away a champion?

I like this trash talking guy, then again, I wasn't that annoyed by SFA3's announcer either. That one was worse though.

And, I thought it was a nice little easter egg that fighters talk to eachother during the Destined Battle. At first I thought I hallicunated when I heard Sagat screaming Ryu's name when prepping his Ultra but its actually there.

Got my hands on a PS3 copy today. I'm still getting a 360 copy on Friday so I'll be able to play against both sets of friends

I only played a couple of hours but already have a nasty blister on the go from the D-pad, so hunting for a stick or an adaptor to use my PS2 one on the PS3 will be priority one tomorrow. But despite the pain and blood and probably pus to come it's an absolutely brilliant game.

It feels just right for a step up from the simplicity and hidden depth of SFII without messing around with it too much, and it doesn't take long at all to get a handle on the new combo systems. As much as I love SFIII, this is going to get more play just because it's so accessible that I'll be able to convince people to play me at it.

Nice touch that you can set voice language per character too. I was slightly miffed when Ryu was speaking English with an American accent but once I'd unlocked the option I could have him speaking in Japanese while leaving Ken, Guile, etc in English.

It's an excellent touch. I'll be setting all the asian characters to JPN voices straight off. What's Zangief sound like in English? Russian accent?

I'm pretty sure Ken's s.mp to s.hp is still a link move, and do not cancel into each other. I think the game registers a combo count if a consecutive hit is scored within a certain (small) time frame. So moves performed by cancelling into another move i.e. c.mkxxfireball will register as combos, as well as the s.mp --> s.hp.

NB: As far as I can tell, the end of that link can be cancelled into a special. So you can do s.mp-->s.hpxxfireball or, my personal favourite (and most other people's), dragon punch.

If you mean in terms of actual characters in the game, you'd probably be best off starting with a shoto, so Ken or Ryu (Ryu might be best seeing as he's higher-tier than Ken here). All depends what kind of style you prefer though: fast and agile, solid all-rounder types, grapplers etc. Once you get into the swing of things, it's a good idea to learn a few different types of characters to keep things fresh. It's always handy to have a good Chunners and it's well worth learning Zangief properly in this game.

Okay, I should have explained things a bit clearer. When I mention EX cancel I?m talking about cancelling the dragon punch by pressing both mids for the focus attack. Now that I think about it this too can be cancelled by dashing so my explanation isn?t really clear.

                      Properties of the focus attack:

Pressing mid punch and kick for the focus attack. The longer the buttons are held the properties change for the move. Level 1 = a normal hit that can be blocked, Level 2 will crunch the opponent and can be blocked, Level 3 will crunch the opponent and is unblockable.

During a special move it is possible to be cancel out of the animation as the move hits by pressing both mids and executing the focus attack. You will flash yellow when you do this indicating an EX move ? this takes 1 bar of your super metre to perform.

During the focus attack it is possible to cancel the hit at any time by dashing forwards or backwards BEFORE releasing the buttons - This can be done at any time and takes no super metre to perform. Note: it is also possible to dash straight after a focus attack hit.

Based on this it is possible to perform the following:

Dragon punch, cancel as it hits by pressing the focus attack, cancel the hit of the focus attack by dashing forwards, Dragon punch (you must wait until your dash has completed its animation before dragon punching). Cancelling the dragon has to be done quickly as once you have left the floor, obviously you can?t focus attack

Another Note: Ultras cannot be combo?ed like supers they can only be linked.

So when the game talks states

Mid punch/kick cancel ? it mean you?re cancelling the focus attack hit before it comes out by dashing
                      When it says
EX Mid punch/kick attack ? it means you?re cancelling the prior move with an EX focus attack and letting it hit the opponent.
                      When it says
EX Mid punch/kick cancel ? it mean you?re cancelling the prior move with an EX focus attack AND cancelling the focus attack hit before it comes out by dashing

It is possible to cancel special moves and a number of normal moves (heavy punch for example) out of their animation by pressing the focus attack but remember it makes it an EX move and takes a bar of super.

I hope this all makes sense. It?s not too bad when you get used to it and it?s possible to do some really sick stuff!

god damnit. I have the PS3 version and can't chat to my mate when we're fighting each other. Why does the PS3 have such an archaic online infrastructure?

You're saying voice chat isn't supported, or it's just not working for you?

Well if it is supported it wasn't working last night. What I can't understand though is why it has a language priority...
