I'm a huge fan of the first two Broken Sword games and while the third title dimmed my love of the series so much I bought but never actually played the fourth game I've always kept an eye out for any new games in the series and still go back to the GBA port of the original game every now and then just to revisit the story. I had high hopes for this updated version but I have been disappointed so far.
In my opinion of the start of the original with George Stobbart's voice over is one of the greatest introduction sequences to any game ever and I was not impressed on start up to find out this section has been rewritten and voiced by Nico with the game now starting from her persepective a few days earlier. This means there are now new characters introduced straight away and you don't return to the original story until at least 30 minutes into the game. When you reach that point the first flaw in the game becomes apparant, the very obvious difference in sound quality between the new sections and the old. While the new sections are crystal clear the old voice samples don't appear to have been redone and seem to be very tinny, reminding me a lot of the PSOne port of the game. There is also an inch thick black border around the outside of the screen at all times that I can't get rid of which is very annoying, the lazy Magical Melody port on the Wii had the same issue.
Wii controls have been implemented well and I've already had the standard block moving puzzle as well the standard puzzles you find in my Broken Sword games.
This port hasn't been as amazing as I hoped it would be so far but it's the original Broken Sword, one of my favourite games ever with a few new features so I will persist and I'm sure the old magic will come back the further I get into the game. Assuming they've finally after however many years got rid of all the game ending bugs that have made it into every other version of the game.
