During the week I noticed Joystiq reported an article saying that a game called Mevo and the Grooveriders was coming out on steam soon with the whole set of unlockable characters from Left 4 Dead were in it.
I was intruiged to say the least, I looked on steam but I couldn't find much on it due to it not being out yet. I wake up this morning to find that there's an indie sale going on in there, I decided to check it out.
Mevo and the Grooveriders was in there, for ?5.39, with a demo to sample a taste, I downloaded it in no time (the full game is 67mb) and tried the first few levels.
So far it reminds me of a level from Rhythm Tengoku, where you have to press the button to the beat of the music whilst playing a platfotmer. Whilst not being exactly the same, it's as close as I could get to it in my mind.
Your little Evo character, called Mevo, seems to be stranded in a strange world where music doesn't exist and it's your job to run about and restore music back to the world blah blah.
The first tutorial starts you off a slow pace, telling the player than when your automated mevo runs into a blue left arrow, you must time your left shift button press to achieve maximum points. Alot like your typical DDR/Rock Band style play. There's also press and hold buttons too.
Level 1 kicks in and things pick up the pace a little bit, with Mevo running across all sorts of terrain making sure you're keeping your eyes are where he's about to go and what arrow is coming up. After the level had completed I was rewarded with a silver vinyl award and I was asked if I wanted to go for gold, highlighting that told me what I needed to do in order to achieve this goal. I decided against it for now.
During my time on level 1 I picked up green notes both in the air and for getting a massive combo, upon completion you can upgrade your Mevo with new styles (L4D skin plz) and some new dance moves. I chose the only one available, ballet dancing! It cost me 0 music notes. Why not?
Oh and I slapped a snorkel on him too.
Level 2 was my final level before I decided to plonk money down, it really put a spanner in the works and enjoying it dearly, an underwater level which consisted of quick presses and octopus arm sliding.
It has a leaderboard, achievements (not steam), rewards and a funky home-made soundtrack. Not bad for an indie game, actually.. it's pretty Groovy! *hides*
