Only 30-odd hours so far. Scraping the tip of the iceberg so to speak.
The first thing I'd have to say is that this is much more difficult than the PSP 2ndG. The lack of the farm makes a huge difference to the amount of money you have and the quantity of resources available to you.
The pig searching for items for you makes up for it a little but not completely.
Anyway.
Single player. Tough. The way MH tends to be.
Online. Fun but frustrating as everyone seems to be a hardened player and knows EXACTLY where everything is. The less experienced get left behind very quickly. You can opt to quest alone but that kind of defeats the point, doesn't it?
Other players are all very nice and never make you feel unwelcome, though few seem to have keyboards so conversation is very limited. And only to Japanese of course.
Playing with others online wasn't fun for me - I have poor armour, a low-powered heavy bowgun and can't afford much in the way of decent ammo. The fun really kicked in when I joined a group to take on a big beastie (this one I think, naturally the names are all messed up...). There was no conversation. We knew what we had to do and did it. Finally taking down one of the big guys was really satisfying and paid out a nice bit of cash.
Bit more explanation of the online world is required I think.
Online is split into 5 sections. Hunter Rank (HR) 0-10, 11-20, 21-30, meeting place and relaxation area. In the areas to quest from there are several different servers, each being able to hold up to 2000 players. Inside the server there are different cities created simply when a player goes there. When that is done, they can set a message like "new players here!" and the like. This is of course really useful for gathering crap players like myself so that we can go a-hunting.
Do we need to exchange friend codes?
No. I have been off on quests with many people I've never met before and probably won't meet again, judging from how many people play online.
While playing I can't help to think of RE4. The music is so similar in places it's uncanny. Being a little lazy, eh Capcom?
Yes, it's tough.
Yes, it does look kind of pretty.
Yes, you have to have a classic controller.
No, the load times are nothing like the MH3 demo (ugh).
Yes, you do get a 14-day free trial of playing online.
Yes, I may well pay to play it online for another month but I don't know after that.
With Monster Hunter 3 out on August 1st is there really any reason to get this? Practice?
I'll be playing right up to the day MH3 arrives. After that...
