I don't have the time for this tonight. FFS.

I can only really play games at the weekend now.

Are all you ****ers on the PS3 version or what? I still plan to do the campaign solo style but I'm thinking about skirmishes.

PS3 here. I've been playing the competitive MP most of the afternoon after saying I was going to do the Campaign first. That's gone out the window. Nah, gonna go back on now for my next chapter of the campaign. I like that I can play it like this. A healthy dose of competitive matches and then do some campaign co-op in between.

            I'm loving it.

Anyone been on that Neos map yet? There's low gravity, so when you jump on foot or VS, you go extra hiiiiiiiiiigh. Not only that, you have a jetpack from the get go. Mind where you land thoooooooooooooooough.

Levelling up in competitive mode is a bit addictive as there's lots of unlockable character parts, weapons and titles to get.

Oh that Hand Cannon I unlocked is ace!

Funny enough you unlock a title called 'First Blood'.

We can go in back 2 back!

It might be just because I'm of a low ranking compared to peeps who are now hitting near rank 60 but the mp on this is starting to seem like a race for VS suits now that people are familiar with their abilitilies and locations. I'm gonna try out the campaign more tonight etc but if it continues to go in the mech spam direction it won't last long for me.

Were you playing in not very populated games? Elimination? You might find that by tomorrow when the game is officially out, that games will be more populated. Personally, I only like to play Post Grab and a bit of Team Elimination. So, there's a good chance that lv.60 will be downed by one of my high level team mates or simply mobbed

But yeah, probably a mixture of the above and that someone in your match was pretty experienced already.

Oh and don't be afraid to go head to head with a VS on foot Plasma nades, Rockets, OR even better, grapple onto the front cockpit to attach and shoot the sh*t out of him

See in this video how the guy grapples an Akrid's tail to shoot it up? Do that on a VS. I just saw him leave a grenade too!

First impression then - this is a bit of a mixed bag so far.

One of my favourite things about the original game was using the grapple hook to speed your way across the level by cancelling the hook as you reach your destination so I was pretty overjoyed to discover all the playground levels they have put into the training mode. You can either wander around these areas at your leisure, reading the green screens for info on different techniques and helpful hints or trigger a time trail and UNLEASH YOUR INNER GRAPPLE NINJA!!!111 40 odd seconds to get from one end to the other is pretty damn challenging and I lost a fair amount of time to it last night trying to work out the optimum path and get familiar with the controls again. I was initially concerned that the new dash feature would replace the grapple cancel, but so far it seems its only function is to remind you of Gear of War and give you a right up the arse view of your character. It certainly isn't as much fun to use as the Rodeo Run and the arc feels even wider, plus I kept wanting to correct the direction with the right stick which is off limits due to having to held down a face button. I expect it will click with time but for now I'm happy grappling about the place. The other training levels are also pretty great, such as shoot all the enemies in the area, activate all the posts, etc all in a certain amount of time for medal rewards and unlockables.

Which brings me onto my next port of call, the character creation. This is pretty damn sick compared to the first one (which only let you unlock characters as you levelled up). Giving you the slow clap taunt from the off also suggests, along with the huge list of ???, that there are going to be some real quality cusses available later on. I selected the classic arse spanky, the spoiled girl annoyed jumpy and the RAAAAAGGGGEEEE to get me started. Having bits from Dead Rising jarred a little tbh, though I did toy with the idea of having a giant teddy bear backpack just for the lollins. This feature is great and I'm looking forward to seeing all the different variations on-line as more people unlock stuff.

So onto the actually game then. None of my friends have this yet so I spent a while (probably more time than I should admit to) trying to find a way to play the campaign on my own without being connected to the internet...is this possible? I could create a private match with AI buddies but only with my ethernet cable plugged in. Be interesting to know why if this is the case. Anyway, once in the first thing that I noticed was the game has taken a graphical nose dive, the bright colourful crisp vibrant world of the first now a fuzzy replication. The forest level was a total mess making it hard to see much of anything, let alone the enemies which I just resorted to thinking of as red crosses instead. I like the screen updates on kill streaks however, even though I didn't feel like I'd earned these as I blindly fumbled around in a mech blasting anything that moved or had a red cross on it. Things improved once I reached an open 'boss' area and felt pretty epic despite the shift in focus from you being the hero to just a cog in the co-op machine. Looking forward to playing with humans too and getting stuck into some post grab matches (something I spent most time on in the original).

So not rocking my world in the way I had hoped but some good stuff in there and its very early days still.

It seems all your regular weapons upgrade the more you level up or maybe they unlock on performance, not sure yet.

I now have Grenade II, Machine Gun II and Hand Cannon (I'm Lv.16). The grenade upgrade as a big blast radius, but they take a tiny bit longer to blow up and you can't throw them as far as regular nades. The second machine gun upgrade has a better rate of fire, but I'm not too sure if it's as powerful as the regular MG. So, there does seem to be some form of balancing in place. You can swap back and forth between weapon upgrade versions.

The Hand Cannon is the second upgrade to the rocket launcher. It can hit a target very very fast and once it hits, it sticks to the target for a second or two before blowing up. Kinda like shooting a sticky nade.

I've read that the third version of the Dummy grenade can fire at opponents!

It is. On the CAMPAIGN menu, go to CONNECTION TYPE and choose OFFLINE (choice of 3 between LIVE, OFFLINE and SYSTEM LINK)
