Nah, they can't. US and PAL can, but neither will work with the Japanese.

Got a team of minstrel, monk, mage, priest at the moment.

It's a bit frustrating how rubbish the mages are so far, none of his spells are doing more damage than a regular attack and his strength's so pathetic he never regenerates mp. It's only Bang and Sap making him worthwhile. Are there any other offensive caster classes? Minstrels do pathetic magic damage too, makes me wonder if they've deliberately weakened magic.

Also seems a bit easy compared to previous DQ games. Not struggling on any bosses so far.

Been trying to get my Nintendo Wifi stick working with Windows 7 so I can use the online stuff. The ultra expensive equiptment seems to make alchemy more important this game but the drops are so annoyingly rare.

The Mage does get a bit better when he gets Crackle, but i hear your pain on running out of magic points. Currently I'm tending to make him just bash enemies in dungeons to increase the chain for one of my physical damage dealers and then save his MP for the boss. I have come across a place that sells the item that regains 30mp but they are quite expensive. My annoyance is that all the MP bonuses you get with a Mage are predacated on him holding the wand, thus even though he can hold a weapon he won't be gaining back MP.

The other class that is offensive magic is probably Sage, but you don't get that until late in the game I think.

Really getting into this now. Going to start looking into leveling different classes. What's a good class to level to get a mage's HP and attack up?

One thing I've noticed though... So many of the stories are pretty sad and depressing with bitter sweet outcomes at best. Just done the Marion one, everything about it was so sad...

You would have to switch to Soldier and as you level up from Lvl 1 put the points in Courage, you get strength bonuses at 16, 40 and 56 and HP at 90 (these are permenant and will stick when you swap back to Mage).

If I complete a grotto a second time, will I get a different treasure map?

I spent an hour yesterday trying to find the location of the second map I get and I'm completely stumped. Hope this doesn't mean I'm screwed for grottos as that tag mode is worthless (what are the chances of you coming across someone else? Nil?).

I'm pretty certain can you replay maps over and over and get new maps.

This'll help with locating those pesky grottoes!

ok.... I'm irritated now. If that site's correct, the treasure map doesn't actually match the real map. It's #25, look at the shape of the path between the two maps. No wonder I couldn't find it despite zooming to every town.

                    Thanks for the site though.

What level were you when you finished the first map? My guys are around 29 but the boss can kill me easily if he uses two physical attacks in a row on one character. As an aside I imagine your map and mine are very different, but are the bosses on everyones first map the same I wonder? Is yours like a horse?

I must've been about 23-24 on the first one.

I *think* the strength of the bosses is randomised with each map.

It's a mix of a horse and an aztec style cat I keep getting (beaten 3 so far). I think there's an element of pot luck in beating him. Generally speaking he'll only do one damaging attack per turn. My advice is to just keep pounding into him with a priest going all out to heal as much as possible. Try using accelerate to ensure the priest heals before he attacks. So long as you keep doing damage and you don't get an unlucky string of attacks, you *should* be able to beat him before he can wipe you out.

The priest's limit break type move is godly for this, use it whenever it activates (undoes debuffs), The warrior one is also very handy.

On a related note it seems most of the time you don't actually get any drops from the bosses which is incredibly annoying. Beaten 3 and only got a single whip so far.

The first boss is a horse (Equinox I think). I managed to beat him around level 30 for most of my characters. Just for fun I tackled him when my party were around level 45 ish and demolished him in two turns.

I've read that the treasure maps are post-game tasks anyway so I wouldnt worry about taking them down yet.

Managed to finish this after racking up around 50 hours in two weeks! Top, top handheld rpg action, not sure if I can be arsed to do the post-game stuff though.

Think I'm on the final dungeon.

Got part way through it then cast 'evac' instead of 'safe passage'. Grrrrrr...

Does anyone know if you can hold equipment without equipping it? I've bought ice and fire shields which have the same defence value but differ on their elemental defence, I'd like to be able to give two to each character and be able to swap them out mid battle but I can't seem to move equipement around from the items menu and the equip menu just seems to put everything not worn into the mysterious equipment bag...
