Longest named game of the year?
Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Saga - Masoukishin - The Lord of Elemental
Until recently I thought there were more SRW games than there actually are. Many on the PSX/PS2 are just remakes of games on the GB/SNES/Saturn - just like this is, having originally been released on the Super Famicom in March 1996.
"Masoukishin" (魔装機神) is the name given to four powerful robots which are found in LaGias, a parallel world inside the Earth. Masaki Andou is a potential pilot who is brought to LaGias from Japan and shown how to use "Masouki" (魔装機), giant combat robots, in the hope that he might be chosen by the spirits that inhabit the Masoukishin to be a pilot in one of the four.
That's all the plot you're getting from me.
The control system is standard SRW, with the exception of the direction the character facing having a impact on how much damage they take from an enemy attack. I think something similar was used in FE: Path of Radiance. Attack from behind and do more damage, attack from the front and there's a great chance of the enemy evading.
I found the start of the game rather disappointing. After having played other SRW games, I was used to the cute SD mecha and their ridiculous attacks. This is much more realistic, and with no deformation of robots. Attacks are mundane to begin with - sword slash and rifles being the only ones available until the Masoukishin start to appear.
I perceived and started to enjoy it more. There's less text to wade through than SRW:W, which is no bad thing. Probably due to not having X different plotlines from various anime to weave together. The battle animations are well done, and there's even a smidgen of voice mixed in there too.
No bonus book-thingy is a bit of a shame, as is the price of it. But I'm enjoying.
