Demo came out, received lots of flak from people across the internet, but I kinda dig it. How do I add a poll to First Play topics?
I finished the PS3 demo yesterday. I really like it. Title screen music is ace. Voice acting is just right (love the accents), and the script is clever. Enemies shout out international radiotelephony spelling alphabet acronyms (OSCAR, MIKE, GOLF) which spell out netspeak.
Everyone complaining so bitterly about this is just being negative because that's the cool thing to be. It's not Braid or Limbo, but it's not crap either.
It's a 2D action platformer with loose battle mechanics, massive maze-like levels, and a kitsch pseudo-anime aesthetic that mixes in internet humour.
It feels like an awesome western Sega Genesis game (not Mega Drive, Genesis). Or maybe an Amiga game. Lots of secrets to find, lengthy, weird levels (vaguely Earthworm Jimmy in terms of sheers maze-like size), crawling up walls is fun, and the floaty combat isn't offensive or infuriating. It's just kind of there. There's also a subtle but cool music track. I dunno, I got vibes of Kid Chameleon, X-Men, Pirates of Dark Water (Genesis version), Flashback (in terms of futuristic styling), and numerous Amiga platformers which I can't remember the names of.
It's a fodder game - the kind your mom bought you because the guy at the store said it was cool and you played it when you were a young teen because you didn't have the internet.
It's not sophisticated, the levels are VERY long (though have numerous checkpoints), and I can see it being overlooked/heavily criticised. But I can't find anything which I especially dislike about it. The worst I can say from the demo is that it doesn't stand out as being unique enough to warrant adding to my massive list of unfinished games. And based on this level's length, there's a lot of game time here.
If I win the lottery or it gets discounted, I'm buying it.
