As a Guitar Hero fan since the PS2 original I look forward to a new GH game. I liked World Tour, loved GH:Metallica but the setlist of GH5 left me cold and as for Van Halen I try to do what everyone does and pretend it doesn't exist
Thankfully, from what ive played so far, the series is back on track. Everything that was good in GH5 is here too so the fantastic Party mode makes a welcome return. For those not familiar with it the game plays songs at random (or you can create playlists) and at any time people can drop in and out without stopping play and join in on any combination of instrument of difficulty. The music never stops, the players never 'fail' so it's perfect for a bunch of people with various skill levels to join in an have fun.
The single player Quest mode is fairly straight forward with you taking control of each character, each containing their own genre specific setlist, to earn enough stars to turn them into their 'warrior of rock' form that double the power of their unique ability.
New to the game are the special powers each character has. These range from earning star power from note streaks and starting with a 2x multiplier to having a boosted crowd meter or having the ability to go up to a 5x multiplier. It's a good addition.
The character specific powers work well and give the game an extra dimension. Playing Quickplay+ allows you to combine any two powers in attempt to better your high score. Which ones you pick of course can vary from song to song. In easier songs the note streak bonuses are probably the best ones to go for while on the harder ones the powers involving star power would prove more useful. You can play without them of course with scores kept separate but it's nice to have the choice.
The fact that the game seems to have moved more towards earning stars than high scores is a positive change in my opinion. In the past there was only 5 Star and 100% to aim for. Now, with the right powers, you can push the star count into double figures if you do well enough so there are more levels of success than before and more reason to replay.
Speaking of reasons to replay, every song (disc or DLC) has 13 challenges attached to them. These can be anything from alt strumming certain sections, obtaining a big streak or doing particular solos using only hammer ons. The 13 challenges are spread across all instruments as well as some for a full band too. Again, a good addition.
All in all I have very little to complain about. Song charting is good, ive certainly not seen any abnormal charting anyway. The soundtrack is a vast improvement on last years, lots more variety from different genres from different eras of music. If I had one gripe it would be the very hardest group of songs (DragonForce, Arch Enemy, etc) are locked at the start but that can be remedied in about 5hrs of single player so it's hardly the end of the world
