Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (360/PS3/Wii)

As a Guitar Hero fan since the PS2 original I look forward to a new GH game. I liked World Tour, loved GH:Metallica but the setlist of GH5 left me cold and as for Van Halen I try to do what everyone does and pretend it doesn't exist

Thankfully, from what ive played so far, the series is back on track. Everything that was good in GH5 is here too so the fantastic Party mode makes a welcome return. For those not familiar with it the game plays songs at random (or you can create playlists) and at any time people can drop in and out without stopping play and join in on any combination of instrument of difficulty. The music never stops, the players never 'fail' so it's perfect for a bunch of people with various skill levels to join in an have fun.

The single player Quest mode is fairly straight forward with you taking control of each character, each containing their own genre specific setlist, to earn enough stars to turn them into their 'warrior of rock' form that double the power of their unique ability.

New to the game are the special powers each character has. These range from earning star power from note streaks and starting with a 2x multiplier to having a boosted crowd meter or having the ability to go up to a 5x multiplier. It's a good addition.

The character specific powers work well and give the game an extra dimension. Playing Quickplay+ allows you to combine any two powers in attempt to better your high score. Which ones you pick of course can vary from song to song. In easier songs the note streak bonuses are probably the best ones to go for while on the harder ones the powers involving star power would prove more useful. You can play without them of course with scores kept separate but it's nice to have the choice.

The fact that the game seems to have moved more towards earning stars than high scores is a positive change in my opinion. In the past there was only 5 Star and 100% to aim for. Now, with the right powers, you can push the star count into double figures if you do well enough so there are more levels of success than before and more reason to replay.

Speaking of reasons to replay, every song (disc or DLC) has 13 challenges attached to them. These can be anything from alt strumming certain sections, obtaining a big streak or doing particular solos using only hammer ons. The 13 challenges are spread across all instruments as well as some for a full band too. Again, a good addition.

All in all I have very little to complain about. Song charting is good, ive certainly not seen any abnormal charting anyway. The soundtrack is a vast improvement on last years, lots more variety from different genres from different eras of music. If I had one gripe it would be the very hardest group of songs (DragonForce, Arch Enemy, etc) are locked at the start but that can be remedied in about 5hrs of single player so it's hardly the end of the world

What's the scoop with transferring past content? I can't seem to find out anything about this.

Pretty much everything goes from what I can tell. All my World Tour and Greatest Hits songs are showing up along side any DLC. I havent transferred my GH5 songs as there was only about 3 songs on it I liked but the option is there, as is the ability to transfer GH:Metallica which I will be doing soon as I believe the Metallica export is free for a limited time.

Was there a charge for transferring each game?

Also when you say you transfrred GH:WT do you mean all the songs or just the ones that were trasferble in GH:5?

EDIT: Nevermind I have found some info now:

            This is really good.

The setlist is great, probabaly the best since the PS2 games.

Compared to Rock band 3 it is obviously going to be lacking as it dosent relaly do anything new, but what it does do is be one of the best games of its type, so theres nothing rong with that really.

The quest mode is kind of bizzare but when I completed the first set list and my guitarist transformeed into a punk rock version of Nightcrawler from X-men and proceeded to play the theme from the spiderman I couldnt stop laughing and realised I was having a blast with it.

            So yeah, its fun.

I didn't like this. The note placement doesn't feel right for me and even Mrs Teddy said the same and she only plays bass.

Despite continual attempts at calibrating it I get no end of lag.

I really think that Guitar Hero is poor now. Activision are just bleeding the name now whilst Rock band continues to innovate.

For the first time I'm holding off Guitar Hero, but I'm getting Rock Band 3 on release day.

After not being to update all my content to GH:5 last year and Activision's false promises of more content being made foward compatibile, as well as some awful downloadable content for the past 12 months, I have really had to think twice this year.

I really didn't enjoy the demo for this game at all, and I'd consider myself a pretty big Guitar Hero fan. I will pick this up at a more reasonable price further down the line I think.

Aye, from what I've played of RB3 it's going to rule the music genre for a loooong time! The keyboard is great and the crazy guitar with all those buttons is truly incredible!! Everything about it is polished until it blinds you. The GH games just seem like a poor alternative now.

I met John Drake (Harmonix communication manager, in the last issue of Edge) at my annual Conference last week and asked if they'd ever do amplitude for PSN but they don't own the rights.

It's cool that Soundgarden are putting their new album up on GH though. Big fan of Cornell and the boys.

As I already said this is deffinitley nothing new, but it is very good.

i'm not sure why anyone who likes the genre wouldnt like it. The note charts are very good actualy, nothing is out of place. Many people often say that Guitar Hero has too many notes and/or Rock Band has too few, this game actualy seems to be bang on with every song as far as I can tell, its actualy quite impressive, even if it probabaly shouldnt be.

                    Its a good game.

On a side note though i had to buy the guitar with it as I have been using the one from guitar hero 3 for years and it is now dead. Its squeaky as hell, very annoying, ive read before that this is a common problem with the more recent Guitar Hero guitar controllers so I'm not suprised, still ridiculous though and not good.

I'm just finding some of the songs don't fit what I'm playing. Even Mrs Teddy, who is no musician, says the same. She says it takes her out of the experience. Compare that to RB where she says it "feels" better. Not scientifically quantifiable sure, but it's enough for me.

What difficulty are you playing on. Ive only tried expert but so far the music has matched what I am asked to press as well as in any Rock Band game.

Are you sure you have the calibration settings set up properly? The audio calibration in particular is really bad in this one for some reason. It took me a few attempts to gauge what my audio lag should be set to as it's now done manually. I really noticed it was way out when I played the 2112 suite but I have it sorted now and it plays just as well as any other guitar game, Rock Band included.

I'd go so far as to say this is the best in the series since at least 3, I thought World Tour was OK and hated 5 but this seems like a return to form. It's nice to see Neversoft catering for the hardcore players once again. It took me a fair few goes to beat the final boss in quest mode on expert thanks to This Day We Fight being bloody hard. Surprisingly the much hyped Sudden Death is far form the hardest song in the game, great track though if you're a big Megadeth fan like myself.

I don't want this game but...

More excitingly, Rocky Horror Picture Show songs are on the way on 26th October. It's only my favourite musical of all time. Yes that's news. Bundled are "Time Warp", "Sweet Transvestite" and "Hot Patootie", and they'll cost 440 Microsoft Points on Xbox 360, £3.99 on PS3 and 550 Wii Points on Wii.
                            Sweet Jesus that's tempting.

Grabbed the free 'Rocktober' pack yesterday which was a nice surprise. Muse songs for free? Yes please! (even if Resistance is a stupid pick given the more guitar-heavy MK Ultra and Unatural Selection on the same album...)
