Double Fines first release since they changed to producing smaller downloadable games.
*** If you are playing on a SD TV try the demo first. The text is tiny.
Bought instantly without trying the demo. Played around 45 minutes so far. I've read that it can be completed in around 5 hours. Enjoying it so far but it is only an average game. It's an effortless game that would be enjoyed the most when played with a child next to you.
You start out with a short cutscene where you choose which sibling you want to play as. Then you are put into a blocked off section of your neighbourhood and let loose without any hand-holding or guidance. Once you explore the area you'll find a section that will set off another cutscene which will set up the scenario for the game.
You will then explore the neighbourhood collecting candy and other items, do the odd mini game and battle monsters in turn based scuffles.
Despite it being a double fine product the game lacks a lot of polish and doesn't feel high quality. The art style is very nice but beyond that it's fairly bare. There are a few glaring points that you would expect to be in the game but are unfortunately missing. The main one is Audio.
There are no spoken parts, all text. From the opening cut scene and through out it is very obvious that it is missing and it would add a lot to the game. There is no persistent music, only intermittent spooky music. The ambient sounds are nice but the whole soundscape doesn't add to the experience.
The other element is the way transitions between the game world and other scene/parts of the games are handled. You are abruptly thrown between the sections which lessens the experience. From the off you are just placed in the world with absolutely no guidance. Although most modern games over do the hand-holding having nothing gives are very poor first impression.
As I said I've enjoyed it so far and some of the text has been amusing but the game does feel like it was released too early. Another 20 mins in the oven and one more layer of icing would have made it a more nom nom nom.
Passable but nowhere near godly.
