Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger vs. Darkdeath Evilman [PSP]

    Disgaea: The roguelike

Another NIS game reusing the Disgaea engine but at least this time there's a big change to the game format. For those who don't know what a Rogue-like is, it's an RPG that appears to be in real time but is actually turn based. You move one square, then the enemies move one square, you attack, then the enemies attack.

The plot is incredibly nonsensical and hard to describe so I'll simplifying it as much as possible.

Darkdeath Evilman wants to kill Super Baby. Super Baby is prophesised to save mankind, if Super baby is killed, the world will end. The Unlosing Ranger races to defeat Darkdeath Evilman but is hit by a car, killing him. He passes his transformation belt over to you and you become the Unlosing Ranger.

You battle DarkDeath Evilman and get wiped out. You're then sent to Bizzarro Earth to train until you can become strong enough to defeat him.

The game is structured very in the same way as Disgaea, you do story levels by selecting them from a list and get a bit of story before and after. Presumably at some point there's an open random dungeon system but I haven't encountered it yet.

You have two level systems, a base level and a current level. If you die or leave a level, you go back to lv.1 but your base level improves which improves your starting stats. So you become weak again but also become stronger (simple!).

Weapon's conditions lower the more you use them (and they lower fairly fast) so you tend not to stick with one set of equipment that you stick with and all actions slowly raise your hunger which requires you to eat to replenish.

There's a huge amount of customisation as each body part and weapon changes your appearance. You can also install items in your body as "chips" which increases your base stats.

It's very enjoyable so far, the gameplay is very simplistic, most of the depth comes from customisation and inventory management.

The writing is up to Disgaea standards and is pretty funny at times (the plot outline I gave doesn't come close to saying how bizzarre it is). There are constant little

Downers? The disgaea engine is a bit clunky, even for this style of game and there's issues with you clipping through scenery in your secret base.

Your character is mute and has no personality (the default name is even "main character"), all the dialogue is people talking over you. The dialogue is funny, just don't expect yourself to have a part in it. Ever.

    Isometric viewpoint + d-pad + every movement uses a turn = frustration.

You can only have a single save game (only PSP game I know with this), if you save partway through a level and turn the system off, the game will assume you died and put you back at level 1 and take away all your non-stored items.

Good to see you're enjoying it. I posted a thread in General Gaming asking about this one, but no-one replied, so it's good to see this thread started. I went ahead & ordered it from VG+ as I thought that it might be difficult to get hold of in the future.

Still Enjoying it a lot. I think this is easily as funny as Disgaea 1, if not funnier.

There are a few niggling faults with it though:

Finally unlocked the first 60 floor random dungeon... It has unbelievably annoying music. It's fairly funny and quirky the first time, then you realise it's only a couple of minutes long and it loops endlessly in a dungeon that takes hours.

Not enough food in said random dungeon.

The way the game trickle feeds you features and upgrade options. I've no idea how to rank up weapons but I've also no idea if that's something the game will unlock or if I'm just not doing it properly.

Think I may give up trying the random dungeons. I've been grinding endlessly to do them, spent 90 minutes doing the 60 floor one, on floor 57, was going strong then go onto the next floor and spawn next to 3 or 4 enemies. 3 of them are heavy hitters and take off a big chunk of health then move onto the last one, he does a special move that hits me for about 50% of my total health and kills me.

May just chug my way through the rest of the game and ignore that. It simply takes too long and isn't rewarding enough (the caravan system is awful, you should be able to leave dungeons with money and items at regular intervals)

Just done the Oreimo level. Made me chuckle.

Going to attempt the Dokuro-Chan level now.

              Finished it last night.

The gameplay bit itself is lacking in any real depth and relies almost exclusively on you being a higher level than than enemies, even moreso than in disgaea. Most of the boss battles end up being disguised puzzles as a result.

The writing is funny throughout though.
