Gran Turismo 5

Just booted up this game after a couple of months away with Dirt 3 and wow it looks dated. I can't believe how much better Dirt 3 is for fun and aesthetically.
What would be cool though, if there was a PC version of GT5. Not going to happen, but I'd love to see it running with better technology.

I did the same thing some time ago and couldn't play it for more than 5 minutes. It might have a high framerate, but give me the excitement, sense of speed and effects of DIRT 3 and Shift 2 any day.

If I hadn't forgot about it, I would've sold it off when it would still fetch a decent price.

A PC version would probably not change that much. It would up the resolution, smoke, AA and would actually pump out a stable 60fps instead of what were getting in GT5. But it would be the same train wreck in terms of menu navigation, AI and career mode.

I actually tried to get back into the other day. Even with the awesome driving force GT wheel I couldn't play it for more than 5 minutes before aching to get back on Dirt 3. Sad but true.

GT 1 to 4 were the leaders of the racing genre on the consoles, although the series was being warned and criticized for becoming stale during GT4. That was in 2005.

I can't exactly say that GT5 leads the pack as GT3 did back on Ps2. This time, GT feels like the dinosaur thats lagging behind. I don't think a game with such development budget and time should end up like it did. Especially considering 1 to 4 were at least very consistent, near-flawless, packages.

The universal sales and metascores obviously show that this series is in decline.

It safe to say that graphically, sonically, presentation and physics-wise it is pretty much spot on. However its fundemental refusal to be a game ** and just to remain a piece of software that you load up and "do some stuff with cars" is what it needs to address.

However, given the dev teams distinct refusal to bow to any outside influence or direction means that will not change any time soon, not with that attitude anyway.


** Am I right in understanding the Leaderboards still do not exist for this? This would go some way to making it a "game" of sorts.

Not exactly right no, there are leaderboards for the seasonal events (time and drift trials)

By the way I think my last question got lost in the renewed wave of same old complaints after I bumped the thread - does anyone know how the leaderboards are divided for the sake of the prizes?

I let my PS3 go after GT5, how is the game holding up to those who are still playing it? It done so many things right but the structure, progression and schizophrenic ideas killed the game.

I can confidently say, it’s the only Gran Turismo ( With the possible exception of GT3 ) that disappointed me.

It just seems to lack a sense of speed compared to other games and I've done all of the cups I can be bothered with - there really doesn't seem to be that many tracks. I certainly don't think it is anything special graphically either and I could never get the 3D to work properly for some reason dispite KZ3, COD BO and Motorstorm looking great in it.

I actually quite liked the addition of the B-Spec mode but not enough to hold my interest this long. I haven't fired up the game for a couple of weeks now so I think its time to sell it and move on.

Sorry to hear that, especially as you inherited the setup from me! The wheel and stand made the game come alive, but even that can?t save a less than satisfying career structure and odd design choices.

Forza 4 could be the game where Turn 10?s series overtakes Polyphony?s in my eyes.

Have Polyphony kept the seasonal events going and added any new features since March 2011, or has it remained at that level?

Wools, GT5 was off the whole time the PSN was down so no, the seasonals were not continuing. New features and new seasonals have been added since it came back up, not that it matters to the moany gits round here.

We've been reading the EXACT SAME F**KING COMPLAINTS posted every page over and over endlessly ever since this game was released.

There was a spell there where we got some good discussion from people who were actually playing it, but the PSN outage has seemingly done for that.
