    Kingdom Hearts Re:coded DS

Another Spin off, more increasingly complex canon to follow?

Basic plot is as lightweight as it comes. Jiminy Cricket is looking in his diary, finds it blank aside from a single phrase. You explore the diary as a digital version of Sora (not actually sora himself or Sora controlling it) and try to eliminate all the bugs.

You explore nothing but old worlds but they're now filled with blocks and bugs. The bugs are fixed by entering a computer like zone and defeating bugged heartless. These are a bit of a chore but they tend not to be too long and give you rewards for fixing them.

The battle system is largely the same as Birth by Sleep although instead of forms, you just get stat bonuses. It keeps the merging system for gaining new skills. The level up system is a more flexible version of the 358/2 system where you put chips on a multipath grid where you unlock bonuses and extra abilities.

The battle system is great and the graphics are much smoother than in 358/2. The biggest problem is the camera. It's awful. No matter how you tweak the controls you can never control the camera with the L and R (they reserve the L for selecting abilities), you can only center it on the direction you're facing. This means you're constantly fighting with the camera.

Doesn't seem to do a great deal plot wise, most of the characters in the worlds are focused on the bugs and the plot is moved along by the appearance of someone in Organisation XIII robes. It does seem like they're drawing out as few elements as much as they can. Guessing this game won't be vital to follow the KH canon. Hints from the intro suggest that this may be linked to 358/2 more than anything else.

In terms of what games you need to play it? It takes place after KH2 and so far it's referred a bit to things being 'different' to how things happened in KH1.

I'm guessing to enjoy this you need KH1, CoM and 358/2.

At the moment it's decent but the camera stops it being really good.

    Finished this last night.

The battle system is really good, it's impressive how much they squeeze out of the DS and the virus sectors are pretty neat. That's about it.

The plot is wafer thin, don't play it if you want new insight into the KH universe, it's about as close to non-canon as Nomura is likely to make a KH game. It does set up KH3 or KH3DS but it does so in a way that adds nothing to the story.

The game features the worst selection of worlds out of all the games and it makes you play through each of them twice. The special modes like the 2D platformer, RPG and Space harrier stages are neat but under used.

And screw you whoever came up with the bonus condition "play at night" in a game with no quicksave. 30 minutes of playing wasted for something out of my control.

Worst of the KH games easily.
