    Catherine - ATLUS - 360 & PS3

I'm not much good at these first play type posts but since no one else has started one I thought I'd give it a shot.

So, what is Catherine all about? Well, going from the promotion videos you'd expect it to be a full on sex romp. Far from it to tell the truth. Sure, there are a few provocative scenes but nothing that would turn your face red. No breast, no bush, err, no nudity at all. It's all suggestive. Now, that may put a lot of people off but why should it? You buy a game to play, not to pleasure yourself, right?

The story goes (without giving too much away) that you play the role of 32 year old Vincent. A guy who has been dating Katherine for 5 years. The relationship seems to be going nowhere and when pressed about the question of marriage he always folds. Katherine also announces that she is pregnant in order to get an answer out of Vincent but again it's no go. Vincent soon comes in contact with the much younger Catherine. Note the similarities in the name? Catherine's age is never told but I'd say she is around 20 since Vincent refers to her as "that kid".

Things start to become tricky for Vincent now since he has effectively had an affair with this 20 year old Catherine which in turn starts his nightmares. It's these nightmares in which you play.

Each nightmare is set in an ever climbing set of block stairs. The rout to the top is never clear so Vincent must pull, push and remove blocks in order to make a path for himself. Sounds dull doesn't it? Actually, it's extremely addictive and quiet challenging. At first I didn't think I would enjoy the puzzle elements of this game but I was wrong. Every night I've played since getting it up until I completed the game. It was no easy task even on Easy mode but extremely satisfying once you've figured out the correct rout to take.

As well as the puzzle nightmare sections, Vincent meets up with his pals every night at the Izakaiya, sort of a snack bar type place. n these sections Vincent can talk to other people in the bar as well as receive and send mails from his phone. These section may seem pointless to anyone who can't understand Japanese but I can assure you that these are some of the best parts of the game. In these sections the story is driven very well. So well in fact you will force yourself to play through the nightmare section just to see what will happen next.

The bottom line is that Catherine is a very addictive action puzzle platformer which will appeal to a wide audience. The lack of not understanding Japanese is going to take away an awful lot of the experience IMO but with everything looking so lavish you may not care.

A truly recommended game and one that I am very happy I took a chance with. Just don't expect it to be a walk in the park.

    Yakumo

By the way, I've found two 100% bugs in the game on the last few stages. I'll upload them to YouTube. Seems that the japanese game testers couldn't reach the end since both bugs are very easy to create.

Talk of it being insanely difficult, even on easy, and having to sit through long, unskippable cutscenes if you get a game over have put me off this a bit. It's a shame because the story sounds really interesting.

It's not insanely difficult unless you're a dumb ass. Seriously, I'm not brain box when it comes to these types of games yet I completed it (on easy) so I wouldn't say it's as hard as people are saying. It's not easy, that's for sure. As for having to sit through the cut scenes time and time again, well, I've never had to do that yet. No idea what that's all about.

Honestly, give the game a try, you'll like it if you give it a chance.

I've not died yet due to the crazy amount of 'retries' you get on easy and you tend to be able to grab a pillow (which adds another retry) before you fail so its pretty infinite (at least so far is has been). When you fail you get a very short scene of you dead and then you're right back in. Maybe when you die for real its a longer cut scene?

        Took the

        giant baby

out last night - felt good man! Like the

        Chocolate Milk Bottle?

which certainly picks up the pace!

Yakumo, one of the sheep showed me a way to fly straight up a bronze unmovable stack, but I dont see how he managed it...thinking on it the character looked more like a chicken...its a very strange game innit. Any idea how that works?

Hmm, take care with those magic pillows. You'll soon start to run out once you reach the 7th stage. I had 36 by the time I got there and 2 left by the time the final stage was completed.

I don't recall seeing that hint from the sheep however later in the game you'll come across blocks that can bounce you up about 5 sets. There's also a "power" drink that you can use which will enable you to jump up two sets of blocks at a time.

I'm uploading the pretty awful bugs I found in the game to YouTube right now. I'll post links once they are ready.

You say "power" drink, I say "Chocolate Milk Bottle"

Lets hope they sort those bugs out with a patch before I get there....

                Yeah, it's a bit good.

Up to stage 6, level 3 on Normal and... I'd say the difficulty has been exaggerated and yet it hasn't? It's a beautifully designed game in that if you persevere and really think about what you're doing you will get better at it, and what seemed impossible ends up absolute cake when you replay it. But it is a very tricky puzzler played at incredible speed at times, with pressure from a time limit, from instant kills, from the inability to take back mistakes on Normal or above (and it is very easy to make mistakes). So it's definitely not impossibly tough, but the idea Normal was once supposed to be Easy terrifies me, to be honest.

EDIT: Just for an example, it must have taken me easily seventy or eighty tries over two days' play to get past the
. Although I did then find myself doing much better after that.

But yes, hugely enjoying it. Got to be one of the highlights of the year already, even with only knowing a few words of Japanese. I'd say in some respects the budget must have been a little tight - there's not many locations and all the nightmares look fairly similar - but the art design and soundtrack are both really strong. The voice acting's good enough I've been sitting through most of the dialogue even when I don't understand the majority of it (though Vincent is apparently voiced by him what did Spike from Cowboy Bebop, among other things, so that helps, heh). And the little bits of story I am picking up on make me really interested to see it in English.

I've wanted a game for ages that does 'adult' stuff in a, well, in an adult manner, basically and not just hur, hur, bewbs. Looks like we may have finally got one. Plus it also makes me laugh that people say 'Tetris doesn't need a story' and at one point I would have agreed without hesitation, but... seems like we can have a straight arcade puzzler and a very dialogue-heavy, intelligent narrative in the same game. Who'd a thunk?

EDIT: And 'chocolate milk'? Call yourself an import gamer, spags? You'll be saying that's what Kazuma Kiryuu drinks next.

Yeah, I don't think I perfected that boss but it was surprisingly easy even on Normal, far more so than the fourth.

Patch is out, and might as well have just included a win button.

Finished the western version, and it's not bad. I was expecting the worst in terms of voice acting, but in the end, it wasn't that bad. Apart from a few duff lines or so, I thought it was done well enough. Though for the PS3 version, the same audio issues from the demo are here. Meaning that the sound balance is a little low during the in-game cutscenes, but quite high in the anime scenes. Also the sound balance between voice and effects during some of the in-game cutscenes and puzzle sections is skewed towards lower voice/ louder effects, which could drown out some speech if you don't play with subtitles on. I've heard the Xbox 360 version doesn't suffer from this. I think there's a patch on the way, so I've read.

First time off I got the

                            Good Katherine

ending. But now I'm working on the others.

I've only played on 'Easy' for the time being, so I could see the story without being too bogged down with puzzles, but I found them quite enjoyable in the end. Strangely enough. I think it's that "Eureka moment/ feeling, much like in Portal 2. Once you've figured a good sequence of steps (or even better, not dieing) you feel like the smartest guy around. Around stage #3 the screw turns and then it gets quite hairy as the pace quickens.

Absolutely great to see small video tutorials on the various 'techniques' you learn through the game. Plus I didn't know there were that many! and I never would've thought of those. Some were absolute lifesavers later in the game.

A word must be said on the soundtrack to Catherine <3

Playing the demo I really enjoyed the characters and story, but thought the gameplay fiddly and a bit wanting. Does the full game expand the gameplay in any way, or is it just a puzzle game at heart wrapped up in a beautiful anime? I understand there's a morality meter and your choices influence that, so are there multiple endings based on said meter?
