I caved in and brought PS+ 1 year sub just to get my grubby mitts on this demo.
The demo consists of single player ladder mode and versus. 1-Player Ladder is basically just the old arcade mode style tower all MK's have. Upon character selection you can choose the difficulty and begin your ascent up the ladder by fighting all 4-combatants available in the demo (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage and Mileena). The game teases a fight with Goro but once you reach him on the ladder the mode ends and your treated to a pretty cool video trailer of whats to come!
My first impressions are favourable, the game has a fluidity pretty much all of the MK's have lacked and the game in general looks pretty lush even in Stereo 3D which is worth checking out.
Every character has their standard move set consisting of special attacks, EX Special attacks (1 super bar required), throws, link combo's, Normals, Special Normals and one X-Ray move all of which are worth playing with and creating your own custom combo's and juggles with, which are paramount to the game. First impressions lead me to believe the combo system is akin to Street Fighter, but the game certainly is all about agressive play and combo's in the vein of the Vs. series. You can disrupt a lengthy combo by using a Breaker which is activated at level 2 on the super meter or later. Finally your left with X-Ray moves which can only be used at level 3. These moves have different properties from character to character, for example Johnny Cage's X-Ray is a counter attack whilst Scorpions has similar properties to an offensive attack.
There are some abilities im yet to understand what their properties are, such as the stance switch. To my eyes all moves retain the same properties irrelevant of stance at least for the demo characters.
Also the game seems to require an 8-button system which is odd considering the Tournament Edition stick has 6 Buttons in the old MK layout.
Lastly detailed in the character move lists are 1x Fatality and 1x Stage Fatality, although Ed Boon in his recent interview with Gamespot suggested theres more hidden Fatalities and Stage Fatalities.
The demo so far leaves me with very good impressions and certainly doesnt feel like the half baked stuff we've had over the last decade or so. Provided theres some decent online modes to go with the plethora of single player content I reckon this could be a really decent fighter. Welcome back MK I've missed you...
