Finally making more time for this (ironically JUST before I get my 3DS...), enjoying the battle system, and the short chapters of battle/story/etc.
Elza is a mercenary. You are Elza. Elza has a sword and a crossbow. To use the crossbow you hold down ZL (playing on a CCPro here of course) and fire with A. You can also select different arrows with up/down on the D-pad while aiming. X zooms in slightly too btw.
To use your sword...you run towards an enemy. No button pushing required. Odd, but it works. There are buttons for diving (Y) and guarding (R/ZR) though. Hiding behind/against things is a majorly featured strategy in this game. Hide (press A) and then tilt the left analogue stick towards an enemy, press A at the same time to do a "jump-out-and-slash" attack, doing fair damage in the process. Alternatively, hold ZL and shoot from cover. The aiming can also be used to point comrades at targets to destroy with their magic (something it took me a while to work out early in the game).
Your comrades take time to charge their magic, and if they take a hit from an enemy they have to start again. To counter this you have the ability to draw the enemy's focus to yourself, making you the target. Who the enemy is targeting is shown by arrows from them to you/your teammates. Elza can also use magic-like elemental attacks, the first being wind - hold A and time will freeze, position the cursor where you want to attack, press A again and he will dash forward
The battles are moderately paced and involve less brawn, more brains - where and how to attack is incredibly important and makes the difference between epic win and mega fail. Look at what's around you before you start, use the aiming feature to identify structures that can be destroyed/etc.
Each character on the team has a health gauge and 5 lives, so each can automatically revives up to 5 times per battle. Die and you're restarting from the last save, bub. After the battle the number of lives resets (at least on the difficulty I'm playing on) so there's no angry "no lives at final boss and can't win" going to be happening in the future.
I love the voice acting. The characters and narration are both wonderful, even the lip-synching doesn't let it down much. So far the story is interesting if predictable in places and slightly moe (naturally). Pretty visuals and entertaining gameplay, which is vastly more important.
Someone only point out to me the other week:
Last Story
Final Fantasy
Hmm.
Good stuff so far, and with apologies for the comparision - nowhere near as frustrating as Xenoblade seems to be.
