Interesting you should say that about slowing down. My favourite Sonic levels to play (not musically or visually) were the frst two Emerald ones of Sonic 2.
Why?
The sedate pace, and the fact you could go back on yourself in the level. I explored every nook and cranny, and found every ring. Then I perfected speed runs on these two levels - plotting a route to collect every single ring in as short a time as possible.
Some of the other levels and other games, you just couldn't do this. Everything was speed, speed, speed, sending you to places you couldn't return to. It irritated me, even though speed and forward progress was the whole point of the series. I just wanted a calmer pace at times, with exploration of these beautiful levels.
