    DW Gundam 3

Just had a quick hour blast on it, still the same game hack'n'slash gameplay like all dynasty warrior games before, but with a focus on boosting around the field like a madman and massive lovenote to gundam fans. In comes new art style to that benefits from the smaller battlefields, looking far better than the open plains of DW7.

Game opens with a forced tutorial battle controlling Setsuna in the 00R, introducing the standard DWG controls of Attack->Charge->Special->Boost, the partner system(acts similar to Marvel vs Capcom striker system), the guard break is gone, as is the transformations in to plane modes and in comes the battlefield gauge, which is new to the Gundam games and i think borrowed from koei's empire games.

Instead of a straight, shortest route to the boss gameplay of all DW games, they have created smaller tigher maps of contecting rooms which have influence on the battle like calling in reinforcements, respawn rate of enemy officers, defensive cannons, opening locked gates, launch pads, and general def/att of cannon fodder and toughness of enemy commander. Makes for a much more involving battlefield when someone like Char can respawn to take a room behind your moving front line.

After completing the opening mission, the game opens up story mode similar in setup to DWG1, 3 main stories with pilots playing them from there point of view. Setup is now Select a pilot, then select a story mission or DWG2 style mission mode, which then breaks down into mission setup where you can read messages from other pilots, set assists(partners and operators), develop moblie suits and buy items/skills.

The other big change to the game are pilot points gained from completed missions, replacing the horrible % chance of unlocking skills and leveling system from DWG2. These points are universal to all pilots to buy pilot skills, pilot licenses, Build MS(from blueprints), MS upgrades and MS special equipment. Pilots still gain exp which opens up extended attacks, but MS no longer do.

Enjoying it alot so far, and a plus note is japanese voices are selectable but not all the pilots have their original VA. I went back to english after a few trials just because im so familar voices from putting way to many hours in to DWG2 even if Setsuna's english VA is horrible(still him shouting "I AM GUNDAM" made me laugh)

i would skip the 2nd as it has alot of grinding in it to open up everything, about the only thing it has going for it is the "official mode" for playing out MGS, Z, ZZ and Char's counterattack, which in 3 has been placed in history mode which sadly has to be opened up by being friends with pilots. Sadly friendship is back but this time doesn't have the negative impact of shooting another ace down, seems unlocking is made up of playing as or being allied with them in Story mode, next level is using them as partners/operators which opens up friendship missions which then opens up history missions...

As for more gameplay thoughts, the enemy A.I. reacts better and it is a really noticable when you try to take a enemy stronghold with out weakening them first, even your allied A.I. grunts/cannon fodder can fend off an ace if you have the advantage in rooms owned. The other big change is a rechargable HP, abit like Marvel vs Capcom "Red" HP which can be recover if you tag out, but instead not taking damage(you can still attack) it will refill. Enemy Aces have this to, so no more ticking HP off at distance with beam rifles.

With the new HP system in place the enemy grunt A.I. now attacks faster, does more damage but unlike older games where getting stuck mid attack knock you out of it often to the floor which made Hard and Chaos modes so frustrating in all DW games. Instead you will shrug alot of the attacks off, outside new ace's and defensive cannons. Because of this i've unexpectly died alot rushing into an new areas without backup or field advantage and found another gameplay change, its not gameover when you die you will respawn like enemy A.I., so battles are won and lost on losing the battlefield.

Other little bits i've noticed are pairing up pilots with operators they know well to like Garrod+Tiffa, Kira+Lacus results in a picture of them joining in on the musou attacks and i assume making it stronger. Also banter between pilots is fantastic, when you have Amuro and Setsuna allied up it makes me laugh everytime.

I see what you're saying, but I bought the second game ages ago and never played it, like a lot of games I own.

Before I buy the third I'll probably spend a few days at least playing the second.

Again, thanks for your opinions. Also, looking at what they did with the graphics for the third Gundam game I wish they had used a similar style for the Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star game.

Tobal: You have this on 360?

Got it the other day and loving it so far but haven't tried the online yet. Fancy giving it a go?

yep onthe 360, im good for online stuff, though my connection on virgin after 7/8pm is piss poor recently but it'll be worth a go. 4 of the achievements are online only to, 20 games, 100 games, 100 kills, 1000 kills. Not tried it yet due to the poor offerings of recent years from Koei putting me off, but the back of the box says something like 15 co-op missions.

Played enough of the main missions to get stuck... seems i've ran out of stuff to give me relating to the story, but story clearly isn't over, so i reckon i need to open a pilot somewhere or complete a different set of missions.

As far as leveling goes, opened up part3(of part4) which cost alot of pilot points which im currently using to buy licenses with. Also quite a few of the new suits have extended buffs modes coming out of a musou special making them monsters, Unicorn is a proper gundam/newtype killer just like the show(im pretty sure if your fighting a newtype the suit powerups for longer), while 00R gets trans-am, Burning goes Shining mode etc, etc. They also changed alot when it comes to unit height this time, F91 and the Wing gundam are tiny compared to even the grunt units.7

As for fav MS, its between Tallgeese II with its a massive double rocket engines strapped onthe back or Heavy Arms with "shoot" stat boosted all the way up, mowing down grunts with hot lead, instead of beams.

And one last note, im still disappointed by the lack of SEED, G and wings updates... to have Treize from wing turn up but not Noin and Glasses bitch or the Tallgeese III is a crime!!(no-ones cares about sandrock), and SEED having only 4 pilots(Lumi without a suit as well) and Lacus is just really odd with all the characters and suits they have to use... and G, whats going on there all those suits would fit perfectly with this game.

I started off with Amuro and finished both story threads with him(Those Who Understand & For Peace) without and real issues, then I started with Full Frontal and finished Those Who Fight and am just about to start on For Victory.

I think the way I did it means you can't miss any of the story missions.

Go to the terminal and make sure you read all the messages. That'll unlock more story chapters.

very easy to get into and alot of the early missions are a cake walk if you take your time taking over battlefields and using your allied pilots, but alot of the appeal would be lost if you know nothing of the gundam universe as there alot of banter stuff especially incombat with hundreds of little quips between pilots that i would equate to Capcom vs SnK match intros(like Ryu/Ken fist bumping, Kyo/Iori talking trash to each other).

fav banter so far is stuff like Banagher constantly calling puru and puru2, Marida, the future/older version of them.

First character DLC out today, at a pricey 480 pts.. i still brought it like a sucka.

Comes with Graham Aker aka Mister Bushido and his modified FLAG, Susanowo and 1 new mission, the Mecha itself is pure melee with range attack on charge 6 so it very much like Master Gundam with one key difference between it and all the other melee focused Gundam's, Charge 1 shot has been removed and replaced with DWG2 copy of the Guard Breaker, other little thing i'm not happy with is moving around normally doesn't look good as it just glides over the ground with little action fromthe engines unless you boost(which is you'll be doing 90% of the time anyway).

Graham himself is Setsuna levels of comedy when it comes to his quotes(and his JP VA isn't the anime VA) and sadly he and the Susanowo don't get a Gallary entry which is damned f'ing lazy specially for the price, a little extra work would have been nice. The other bad things are coming from various forums, the DLC characters don't appear as enemies in any mission, and unless other players have them they can't be used online and it will be another 2months before they finish releasing the other 4 DLC pilots and Mecha.

Which i think i'll skip, 480 pts is so much for a half done job, regardless of how nice and different Susanowo plays, and compared to how they are doing the DW7 DLC which works in every mode, comes in massive volumes and cheaper prices this feels like a kick in the balls.

Finally 1000 pointed, the last achieves of lvl5 friendship, +20 matches as various grunt units and "the true gundam dynasty warrior" are a right grind. That last mission is one of the most bastard things I've ever had to do in video games, up there with dark souls Ornstein & Smough (when you did know about them, are unlevelled and can't evade for toffee). 2 hits and your dead from any ace pilot, and they start with a missile base and regen square deep into enemy territory, so until you take them you'll have unending supply for ace pilots and losing ground to missile strikes.

Won by spec'ing gundam unicorn so its normal charge shot (the giant purple laser firing magnum) does a lots of damage, and having a perk for auto charging special attacks, and with that playing a game of keep away with the gun and then using my special attack when charged.
