I've been playing for the last three hours. Here are my impressions:

The overall impression is of a very slick package. I didn't quite appreciate how beautiful this game was in videos. It's silky smooth and very lush to look at. I've played the Chicago level online and it really is stunning, especvially in 480p. The FMVs are up there with the best and the design of the craft is excellent too, with massive zeppelins and loads of planes filling the skies.

The best bit is the explosions which are amazing. When a Zeppelin goes down, you can feel the heat.

Sound is great too, from the splutter of your engine if you boost too much to the perfectly realised "Dukka, Dukka, Dukka" of your machine guns.

Gameplay wise, the single player mode is like a cross between GTA and Pilotwings with guns. You fly to an area, each with several mission to attempt. As you fly near a spot where a mission is, simply press the X button to try it. Missions range from dogfights to races to escorts, the usual stuff you'd expect. In some mission you can choose whether to fly a plane or man a gun turret, swapping at any given point to the best option.

Online is where its at though. I played a few death match games with four others (all yanks) and it was a blast. The maps are great, with lots of stuff to fly around, under or through. CTF is the one though, I played on this for an age. The great thing is again that you can choose whether to fly or man a turret at any point. The CTF games were 5 vs 5 on an American guys server and there were no signs of lag at all. I was amazed! The only slight annoyance is the colours on the radar and the flag is too small to see from a distance, so its too easy to chase after the wrong plane at times, but overall it's a complete hoot .

Is this "As good as MechAssault when first played" good, or "Pfft, MechAssault, what's that?" good? This is first on my list of new XBox games to buy, but as I've just bought a gamecube, I ought to get something for that too. Won't have any spare cash until December... when I'll be saving for christmas pressies.

      Bah, I need a job

        Bah, sounds great...

I'm stuck in customs, read on for my misery:

'Postwatch, the industry watchdog, said services in the city had been "severely disrupted" for the past 11 days.'

'Peter Carr, chairman of Postwatch, described postal services in London at the moment as "appalling".'

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

If it turns up by the wkend it'll be a miracle...

I never bought Mech Assault, so I can't compare. I don't imagine this is an online game that you could play for years (at the end of the day, you are just flying around shooting other planes), but at the moment it's tremendous fun .

                I'll have this tomorrow too.

Has anyone tried hosting a game yet? If so how many players could you host and on what connection?

Had some fantastic games tonight. I really love the maps even though there are only five of them. I keep discovering short cuts and secret bits.

I was playing Wild Chicken tonight. Basically a chicken is flying about the map and each team has to try and collect it and take it back to their base to score points. Cue massive scrum of planes chasing a chicken.

I've played this kind of game many times before on other online games such as FPS, but on Crimson skies it's even better. Because your plane can only shoot forward, you can't back towards the base firing at the enemies chasing you down. You have to rely on your team mates to cover you, so the whole game encourages much more teamwork than the usual free for all that playing with strangers can be like.

Played a few times on 16 player server. It was a bit laggy (the planes moved fine, but sometimes bullets didn't connect) but considering it was across the Atlantic I can't complain.

You can play with two people split screen online too and even have seperate Live account, if one person brings his memory card round.

I tested the for player mode and it looks fairly solid, although its a lot harder to see the other planes. Didn't stay on it long though, as I wanted to get back online .

The single player game is good, but it seems a little pedestrian next to the larks of online play. Can't wait until some more peeps in the UK get a copy.

Hopefully, I can grab a copy today and will be online tonight.

If I see you Brats I will try and hook up with you and you can show me a few of these short cuts, plus if you get hold of that chicken I will cover your 6 as best I can for a noob.

It's almost exactly the same as Yager

This is slightly less linear (still seems linear, but you get to discover smallers missions on your own), and the graphics have higher detail, but essentially this is the same game.
I quite enjoyed Yager as it happens (6/10 ntsc-uk), but it had flaws later on in the game that brought it down a few pegs. I hope that after extended play Crimson Skies doesn't show similar frustrating flaws.

Is this game deaf friendly and easy to play as I am not good at flight sims. I can't navigate and fly to correct place as I easily fly to nowhere.

And also is there any Nazis to shoot down
