Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition

Thought I'd start a new thread for this, just so as not to clog up the headline thread.

So, yeah. It's still Third Strike. It's still amazing.

One little gripe though. Online seems to work generally well, at least for player/endless battles, but ranked matches seem a bit borked to me. For one, why does it search for a match and throw you straight into the first it finds instead of finding a list of waiting players and letting you pick, like practically every other game ever (and indeed, in it's own player matches). Unless I've missed something, you can't create a match either.

I found myself waiting ages last night for it to find a game I could actually get into. Very often it would just be searching for ages with no result at all, or else it would pop up a message saying the session doesn't exist anymore. Fine, I suppose, but it'd be much better if I had a list of potential matches I could choose from. Effectively a 'quick' match is the only option in ranked rather than a 'custom' match, and it doesn't seem to work that great.

Another odd thing I noticed were very high disconnection percentages for lots of players. Fair enough if you're connection craps out on a game and you've only played 2 matches or something- your disconnection rate is going to be 50% until you've played more games. The weird thing was I came up against people with disconnection percentages shown as over 120,000%. WTF?

Anyone else found any online-related weirdness? BTW, my NAT shows up as open/green so by rights everything should be fine and dandy.

edit: just thought of another one too. Why does it only show the ping of other players when you're about to play them? Far better to show ping/connection quality in the initial search results so you can decide whether to play against someone or not. For such a polished package, some of the choices made with regard to the online features seem a little odd.

I can't be bothered with ranked, I've just been adding people in the UK on forums instead.

My NAT is yellow, I want it to be green. Overall pretty good though. I'm on PS3 myself.

Oddly my NAT had went back to red yesterday and I had loads of ranked games no bother. I decided to sort it today, and since putting it back to green I can't get games so easy. Something is amiss for sure.

It's quite possibly the best ever version of 3rd Strike, but in a way my gripes with the game are amplified through this version. The trials are much more difficult that SF4, and I personally would have liked an option to see what the combos and parries should look like for timing etc.

Aye, but I'm shockingly bad at it, which is made even more embarrassing by the fact I now own 4 copies of it.

Finding ranked games is bad, takes too long and mostly finds me people with ****ty connections. I played my cousin and we both have good connections and the game was great! Why after how much stick the MVC3 ranked matchmaking has got, they would use the same system in this game is beyond me.

I'm finding it much harder to get ranked games than any other fighter ever. I'm hoping it's to do with general server gripes as opposed to a flaw in the code though, as match uploads etc are completely borked right now too. Once I found a ranked game though it was lovely and smooth. Tournaments were almost the exact opposite though - found one almost instantly, and although spectating was smooth, actually playing was laggy against every opponent. Still won it though

Only tried the default visuals so far which I'm finding plenty good enough. Elena is the only standout in looking a bit poor, but generally, the animation more than makes up for any visual issues that'd perhaps be a bit more obvious on another fighter. No visible input lag offline for me on 360; was parrying plenty of stuff just fine and most of my combos were coming out just dandy.

Most of all though, hooray for Third Strike! This is still the game I quote as being my favourite of all time and it's a nice port even if there are a few minor niggles. It's certainly not as bad as HDR, that's for sure. Would be good to get a group together for some matches, but I'm up for some 1v1s too - I dabble with quite a bit of the roster so am hopefully not too boring an opponent

I'm using the arcade display with scan lines and it doesn't look too shabby at all really.

Another thing I noticed last night (or at least I think I did- hopefully I wasn't imagining it), sometimes at the very start of a round, my first move wouldn't come out or there was a distinct feeling of input lag. Like I say, maybe I am imagining it and I was just being a bit overzealous in getting started, but I don't know. I haven't noticed any input lag anywhere else though, online or offline.

I'm definitely up for matches whenever too.

Amazing game..still. I`ll second the online problems though. It wouldn`t be as bad if I didn`t have to repeatedly listen to the rap the whole time it was searching!

The game itself is great. Likely the best version of Third Strike out there.

I played this for a few hours straight against friends online and we had absolutely no lag. Its like playing offline. Ranked is crap but I don't think I am ever going to play ranked, I stopped caring for it sometime after SSFIV. I started online with arcade cab and scans but it looks so tiny and crammed nowadays. I now play Normal and Crisp.

I am a bit disappointed by its new presentation though. The new front end is absolutely terrible and the menus itself are a laggy mess. I miss the old presentation with the intro, scoreboards and the red character select screen. This grey **** sucks. There are no ending credits either, and I used to like the track that plays there.

SFIV's lenient controls made me lose my 3S skills, but I'm slowly getting used to it thanks to trial mode. With Ken, Ryu and Chun I only have to beat the final challenge. Those challenges don't reveal a thing, I did know about the jump cancels etc myself but newcomers won't ever find out.

If anyone wants a game on xbox my name is moonwhistle. I bought it on PS3 but I've not gone online with it yet. I'm using random character select exclusively so far, it makes for alot of variety and fun.

My biggest gripe with it is the stupid crap at the sides of the screen. The only way to get rid of it is selecting widescreen which makes it look pure horror show. Gameplay wise it seems great and I don't mind the new stage music at all. None of the filters are ideal so I just use the sketchy looking crisp filter.

Seriously? This game has the worst scanline emulation I've ever seen. The visual options in general are horrible. Admittedly I've been spoilt having this in a cab but I'm quite disappointed with how it looks on my plasma, and it is possible to get 240p games looking good on HDTVs with dot by dot scaling, nearest neighbour filters and decent scanline emulation.

That aside, gameplay feels arcade perfect and the extras are great.

Have to agree, the scanlines look crap.

I've got mine set to original video and no filtering because the filters look crap too.

The filtering may not be everyones cup of tea but I like the way it looks on default setting on my TV. It seems similar to what was done with the sprites on Neo Geo Battle Coliseum which I also thought looked much better on a HDTV thanks to the treatment. That game had a lot more work put into it's stages though. Original settings look horrific on my screen much worse for some reason than other 2d fighters like Garou, FF Special, KOF or Dark Awake. That setting really needs a CRT. I'll have a look at it through VGA too to see what difference that makes.

Only got the demo so far still unsure which version to go for. I don't have Xbox gold right now while PS3 is free online but some are saying there's offline lag on the PS3.
