    Dead Island

Arrived home today to see Shopto had politely sent this to me early so I graciously accepted their gesture by trying out the first hour. I'm on the PS3 version, I'll summarise as it's very much a first impression:

    Visuals:
It surprised me how solid this looks, there's a good sense of scale to the island and it's quite densely populated with debris and zombies. There's a really appealing vibe to the island setting with it drenched in bold colours. Looking out at the horizon it's easy to forget that area's in the distance are reachable and not simply a traditional linear path. Overall the visuals will depend for people on their expectations. They don't match up to the standard you'd find in a game from a major release but for a game of this genre which is constantly running drop-in and out online co-op it's probably one of the best looking games out and the engine runs much better than in the recent COJ: Cartel game. Voice work isn't going to win any awards but it's serviceable and there's some screen tearing and pauses in busy sections but overall a solid framerate so far with some lovely lighting.

    Structure:
Bar the opening scripted prologue (when you leave your room at the start turn left instead of right for a smirk raising location) the structure of the game is very reminiscent of Borderlands with small hub locations seeing you being given missions from survivors and then passing through multi-routed yet slightly linear area's to complete them. Overall, there's instantly a good sense of place.

    Gameplay:
Player movement has a half second delay it seems but you soon get used to it, the aiming is adjustable but very responsive to begin with anyway. Combat does involve a lot of swinging and hoping but to be honest it makes more sense in the setting and never frustrated me during the missions. When trying to aim there's a losse auto aim which will try to direct hits to particular zombie limbs and XP that you accrue is used to unlock perks in a skill tree that's reminiscent of Borderlands.

Online seems to be full of the rapper as on stats he seems to be the best though the patch isn't live yet so that could change. In the end, I think this will prove to be something of a marmite game with some being unable to get over the comparatively clunkier combat and decent but workable visuals whereas with others the game will click and the overall package will result in a solid following.

I've been warned that a Monsoon is coming when night hits and the torch needs to be switched off to recharge. Nice.

I will defo be picking this up at sometime, but not right now. Might wait for it to drop a little in price but I've had my eye on it since it was announced & I think I'm willing to put up with what looks like minor niggles for such an achievement regarding the joining of a combo of RPG/1st Person/Zombie game.

That sort of thing used to be a lot more common before Hot Coffee. Devs are much more aware that people will dig through your data files looking for things these days.

Things do often change name during development, and often the code and scripts keep the old name cause it's a lot of legwork to change it over (and if you miss something, you could introduce bugs). As long as the text database that actually puts up the name in-game gets it right then it doesn't usually matter. Unless you've been using offensive names for things of course.

So Techland were "disturbed" by this?

The developers of a game that was promoted with a trailer depicting a young girl getting zombified and attacking her father?

                The world is crazy sometimes.

Poor techland, this has to go down as the worst launch of the year, which is made all the worse by the fact the game actually looks pretty good!

Another hour in and unless the other new releases distract me I can see me getting sucked into this, it reminds me of Borderlands so much in places. Edge are on something

Well it is called "Feminist Whore".

I imagine the majority of the development team is male (they could even all be male for all I know). The word "feminist" disturbs most men doesn't it? Or is it just me?

I know I'd rather be attacked by a zombie child than an angry feminist anyway.

Will be picking this up tomorrow anyway, looks good.

Played a few hours of this now and have mixed opinions.

It looks rubbish and the menus are pretty clunky, costantly swapping weapons about becuase they break every 2 minutes is a chore. Also, despite the fact that I chose the character who specializes infirearms I am yet to even find a gun, so the chice of character dosent seem to matter at all really, at least not yet anyway.

It has an adictive quality though, you want to explore all over the place and complete all the side quests, and theres alot to do, the combat is adequte and overall its a pretty enjoyable game, but it does lack polish in pretty much every area.

Does anyone know how the save feature works in this?, was under the impression it saved automaticaly whenever you get to a checkpoint but i've just loaded it back up and it's set me back over an hours progress, right back to the start of chapter 2 ffs!!, was quite enjoying it up until that point.

                          *Edit*
reading around the web and the official forums a number of people seem to be having the exact same issue with the PS3 version, looks like i'll have to shelve this one until the useless twats at Techland fix it.

So far I've only ever quit out of the game when at one of the bases like the lifeguard house so effectively off mission and it's kept my progress

Yeah I did the exact same thing before finishing it earlier, even quit the game correctly by pressing start, triangle then waiting for the please wait message to clear before going back to the xmb.
