Spent about two or three hours on this since picking it up yesterday and overall I'm pretty impressed by what I've played so far. Graphically it's fantastic and easily on par with Wipeout HD/Fury with the zone mode tracks looking particularly lovely on the Vita's great screen. I might go so far as to say that the graphics might be a bit too good as it was difficult to wrap my head around the tracks on my first two or three plays due to trying to take in all the graphical detail that Studio Liverpool has given each track.
Controlwise it seems just as tight as in other games in the series. A word of warning though, the default options have control assist on and the button layout is different to older titles (I don't remember weapons ever being on the shoulder buttons) but classic controls are available. You can use either the d-pad,analogue sticks or tilt controls to steer the ship. The tilt control option also has you using the rear panel for acceleration and the touch screen for using/absorbing weapons. I only tried the motion controls once but they seemed unnecessarily difficult.
The single player layout is very similar to that of the last couple of Ridge Racers. You have a large map which expands as you complete each event with multiple branching paths opening up the more you play, some of which lead to unlocking more vehicles and earning trophies. XP is gained as you progress as well which increases your racer level but I don't yet know what the point is other than bragging rights. You also have two types of medals to get in each event, one for a basic pass and the other is an elite pass which you get for achieving certain goals e.g. coming in first in races or reaching a certain zone in zone mode etc.
The soundtrack as always with Wipeout is great, there's a few tracks by artists that are synonymous with the series i.e. Orbital,Underworld & The Prodigy. Some of the tracks are remixes of tunes that appeared in older games e.g. P.E.T.R.O.L by Orbital which was in the original Wipeout iirc. Sadly there's not that many tracks but what's here is good.
My only major gripes that I have so far are the loading times which are pretty bad compared to other games I own on the Vita and although I haven't put much time into multiplayer I've had two or three disconnections in the short amount of time I've spent playing online. The game also has an online pass like Minna No Golf so this will also be a problem for those of you that might consider picking up a second hand copy.
As long as the game doesn't take a major dip in quality I'd say this is a must have for Vita owners and I wouldn't be surprised if I spend much more time with this than I have with the other Vita games I've bought so far. There's also a demo up on the JPN PSN for those of you who own a Vita already.
