    Resident Evil Revelations (3ds)

Just been playing through the new eshop demo and just wanted to add some thoughts.

Coming from a fan of the series. i was very disappointed by RE5, however this has changed my opinion and i think RE:R could be the fantastic action packed game that the 3DS is looking for.

The demo starts you off in a boat, but not wanting to spoil the story, i will not talk about that. It has you taking on usual Resident Evil style puzzles, finding the item you need to unlock the door to get to the next location.

Having the weapon system on both the touchscreen and the dpad makes it seemless to swap out weapons and items and it is a control system that i think works, leaving the face buttons free for herbs, knife and shooting guns. It feels right to me so will be interested to see how it feels with the circle pad.

The game has some very nice graphics and the usual Resi style tense music, it has some jumpy moments even in the demo. One bit has you walking down a dark corridor a zombie drops from the ceiling which i was not expecting. One of the first items you come across, is the trusty scanner having you scan fallen zombies and areas for items and hidden extras.

I think the demo consists of 8 rooms and just as things start to get interesting with the story it is over.

As it is a free demo i strongly suggest if you like this sort of game giving it a go, i am glad i got the bonus pack pre ordered at Zavvi when they had it for ?29 now.

Just had a play through, and really enjoyed it. It oozes atmosphere. The foggy room had me tippy toeing about looking for stuff as well as keeping me on edge waiting for something to jump out. Did you try the other viewpoint? Over the shoulder style. I like this much better than the zoomed first person type.

It's rather good, isn't it. A nice mix of atmosphere and action. I'm not amazingly keen on the enemies, but I'm sure I'll get used to them. It seems to be harder to shoot at limbs than with the gandos and zombies, but I might also just be rubbish. Graphics are very lovely and stick a clean two fingers up at anyone who doubts that the machine can do very nice non-stylised graphics. The controls will be no surprise to anyone, but the scanner device adds a nice little nuance to the whole thing. The revival of classic Resident Evil-style item utilisation is welcome, too. This is also the first Resident Evil game to feature selectable English and Japanese voices, though Japanese voices would sound strange in this context.

Main complaint isn't really anything to do with the game itself - the cramped controls on the 3DS make it quite fiddly to play. Whilst the Circle Pad Pro basically adds nothing to the game in terms of functionality, I might grab one simply because the spread-out controls would stop me from getting hand cramp.

What does the extra pad thing add to the game, change the view point?
I don't have a major problem with cramped hands as I got one of the niko extra life battery's which adds a bit of thickness to the unit.
Got to admit playing a few hours on zelda before I got it left me with cramps.

It looks great and controls like Resi 4. With Jill as the main character. What's not to like. Hopefullynill get my full copy on Wednesday.

            There's a short demonstration here.

Long story short, it apparently maps the camera control to the right stick (which I don't think I have ever used at any point in Resident Evil 5), but more significantly, it maps the action button (normally Y?) to the right trigger, and aim to the left trigger, meaning you don't need to use the buttons on the 3DS itself (which are quite cramped for a game like this).

The demo is ok, but the lack of ammo doesn't work for a more actiony title that features lots of giant hulking monsters moving towards you quite quickly.

Maybe it's feasible to run past the enemies like in the old school Resi games? I don't know, it didn't feel right anyway though. Mind you I will still buy it, its not going to be any worse than Resident Evil Gaiden.

I thought demo wasn't that great - it was way too short and the aiming and controls were pretty dreadful . It was nice to see the series return to a more spooky atmosphere and put in the odd jump moment -

First time through the demo I got stuck due to running low on ammo, second time through and with a slower pace and it was much easier, the scanner can locate plenty reserves to take down all the enemies.

Surely with 3rd person mode enabled it's identical aiming and controls to Resi 4 and 5? Except you can move whilst aiming?

There's definately a discrepancy between the amount of ammo available, and the speed and difficulty of the enemies. I ran past the ones early on in the demo - they don't appear to drop items like in Resident Evil 4 or 5, so there wasn't much to gain from killing them. It looks like finding ammo might largely rely on the scanner, which could either be genius or just plain annoying. We'll see.

The controls are basically identical to Resident Evil 4 and 5, and Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3DS.

The Whole scanning thing annoys me, its like the Scanning in somthing like Metroid Prime, youre constantly switching and scanning everywhere and not only does it make it feel like the game is finding things for you but its also a very boring process.

The scanning is worse here still actually, becuase it seems like it is mandatory to scan every inch of every room (unless you dont want any ammo) which is gonna get annoying fast I reckon.

Yes, I can't help feeling the scanner just creates work for the sake of it. Not like we'll want to miss out on ammo.

Scanning - making a little extra effort.
