    Twisted Metal

Had a go of the demo last night having loved the series throughout (even including the lesser popular entries) and was ready to finally sample the PS3 online goodness.

Twisted Metal was always waiting for a fully realised online version (PS2 rerelease withstanding).

The demo is relatively generous with a level, 8 vehicles, 2 modes, offline and online available. The visuals of the game are on the low to middling end. Car models aren't too bad but the level is pretty sparse and plain. The sound effects and music being very reminiscent of the early TM entries on PS1. There are three control set ups available mimicking the original face button led set ups or more conventional trigger based controls. Going back to TM and being online leads it to feel more fiddly to control than memory would suggest as the quicker required responses don't come so naturally in cars. There may be more in the final game but the available weapons seem to the same as in previous games too adding to the sense of this being an update more than a sequel.

Health packs have replaced regeneration stations removing some of the risk/reward to healing too. If this seems a bit scattershot it's because I'm finding it hard to really settle on a position with it. At it's core it's the same Twisted Metal it's always been but I guess that's part of the problem as there's nothing PS3 about it, I'm unsure how much that negatively affects the experience. The games visuals are definitely too light though and the game needs slowing down quite a bit as it feels too random with everyone just charging around and spamming the fire button hoping it hits. Smaller tighter levels would be a major plus too.

The dev's have promised no DLC as there'll be full content on the disc which hopefully means plenty levels including more traditional and better designed ones await but I've gone from looking forward to it to being very review dependent now.

I'm the same with this one, I've adored twisted metal until now, but this doesn't feel right. Online just can't work well as its basically everyone whoring weapons then firing them from afar, and camping health packs.

Don't like that there aren't set characters, at least in the demo, and there's an odd disconnect in the controls. No matter what setting I try they just don't feel right and I'm always too slow to fire/turn. Twisted metal world tour had them spot on, and after so many years playing it, I can't switch to the convoluted method they have now. Especially with how many buttons it takes just to turbo reverse!

The music is also a bit ****, again world tour had the balance of fun and carnage perfectly. This is all a bit serious , and licensed music and lyrics should not be on the soundtrack.

This has gone from an instant from an instability to a wait til it's cheaper jobby. I'm saddened that it hasn't impressed me at all, I keep playing it trying to like it, I shouldn't have to do that

I can't even install it! Twice now & it freezes at 51%. I have to unplug the PS3 from the mains to get it to switch off! Not a good sign of quality.

See to me this feels great, this feels to me like the most refined TM yet.

I think the controls feel really tight, doing 180's spins is really simple with the X button, turbo reverse is just down on the right stick while clicking it in, it all feels natural to me.

All the weapons at the bottom of the screen and scrolling through is a joy and much better than only seeing 1 weapon at a time and have to scroll through not knowing whats next, in this i get to the weapon i want instantly.

Weapons all feel great with charging options, specials are all cool with an option to change them, i love the fact freeze, mines and shield are on the Dpad now and i just love how the guys hang out of the window to shoot! Kinda interested to see what other mounted guns you can have as the demo only showed the normal chainguns.

It feels super fast paced but super smooth, graphically it isn't WOW but it looks very clean and most of all the FPS is super smooth and solid.

I don't mind the faction thing at all, all the cars still have their own personalities and specials and that's what counts for me. I'm hoping for random spots for health drops and weapons in the final game, i can't imagine it would be hard to implement in the final game and would cut out the camping, although tbh I've never even though of TM as a camping game, you're usually too busy driving around and having fun, if you are camping on a game like this....whats the ****ing matter with you? lol

Reading this makes me miss the original TM, which others were worth getting?

For it's time TM2: World Tour was amazing, too aged now but a lot of its content was remade for the PSP entry TM: Head On

Twisted Metal Black on PS2 was great too. TM3 and 4 despite being rarer and not too bad were made by a different dev and aren't as good. Small Brawl's rarer too and a fun title but again not upto the main games despite it's background.
