So here it is, years after the original last gen comes Sniper Elite V2. The V2 represents a cheeky little nod to its sequel status but more specifically the games focus on the hunt for Germany's V2 rocket scientists. It's 1945 and World War II is coming to an end, slowly but surely America is hunting out Germany's biggest minds for its own war machine and Karl Fairburne has been sent in to make sure that doesn't happen.
Those who have tried out the demo will be at home with the final game, visually it contains all the blemishes you'll be expecting (PS3 version being played) and is somewhat like a slightly clunky old PC game in feel. Without the pre-order bonus Hitler mission there are 11 main missions to complete and after a basic control tutorial you're dropped into war torn streets to hunt down one of the four main V2 rocket minds. The level is the same as in the recent demo with the player moving through linear streets taking down the enemy until you take on a convoy assault. There aren't many sound effects as you'd imagine but the main sniper rifle crack of each shot is satisfying and they handle well. Assault rifles are probably the least reliable weapon but tend to be an emergency measure anyway.
X is your action button with O taking crouch duties and square reloads, standard L&R aim and firing with R2 used to hold your breath for better aiming (but needs a small recharge after each use). Each level also supports online leaderboards scoring as you gain points for not just each kill but how you kill them, your visual reward being the slow-mo skeleton and organ busting shots.
The second level is a little more open to approach as you decent upon a base camp with watch towers and patrols suggesting it opens up more as you play. It's rough around the edges but it's appeal is instant and fun throughout.
