    Ghost Recon: Future Soldier review

Thanks to buying a wealth of games in one go and being outdoors a lot due to the bright weather I've again only had a brief go on this completing the first mission of the game. I'll set out early and say that this is my first real dabble with the franchise as the Ghost Recon arm of the Tom Clancy games has never really appealed and demo's have always left me feeling cold.

What we have here then comes across to me as very Gears in nature. It's the same 3rd person system of cover based shooting through waves of enemies that many other games feature. Now, my newness to the series might mean that that's the norm but given the series history I'd expected more tactical elements than what's present here so far. There are some aspects which crop up such as the sensor grenade but it's a little half arsed in implementation. You can throw the grenade and it will sense all enemies within a set radius even if they're behind cover so you can spot them out. However, taking one down seems to always alert them all and spark off a full fire fight. Also, even if you throw the sensor grenade into the thick of a crowd of enemies they never question or acknowledge its presence which seems daft.

Other than a short and very basic stealth section the game seems to progress in this fashion, the near future setting offering little in terms of difference to proceedings. The game is based around online co-op with you travelling in a group of 4, I've not tried playing with other players yet but the AI of you team mates means you don't really need to think about them as you go around. There's no chatter or characterisation to pick up on, the cutscenes being mostly PS2 era of generic military chatter.

I expect later missions will add some more equipment to the initial load out you can choose from, though it doesn't feel like there's a bad load out as such as confrontations are straight forward. However, it does control well with you having to use the cover as the main character you control can't take tons of damage (something fans of higher difficulties might like on their playthroughs) and the visuals and sound are solid and clear enough. So, overall so far, it's an enjoyable if straight forward game. If you have some mates to play the co-op with it should be a decent blast that way too.

Gah. Me and friend are thinking of this for co op. The mixed reviews are keeping us on the fence. I was hoping for tactical rather than guns blazing. Will be interested to see comments from series regulars.

It's certainly not an all guns blazing game, you have to pick the order you take people out carefully and the timing of your assaults is pretty important.

Its a very similar game to the advance war fighter ones, only difference is the games reliance on tagging enemies and attacking groups of enemies in unison with your squadmates.

Other than some issues with poor character modelling and some times iffy graphics (hate the explosion effects) this game is brilliant and I'm loving it

enjoyong this too tho I definitely recommend playing on Elite as Veteran is a cake walk! good mix of stealth and action, if you do get rumbled its not a big deal as you can shoot your way out of trouble but its very satisfying when you do manage to get in and out without being detected! online is very squad orientated and the lack of players trying to go for the objectives means if you are on your own its pretty pointless. get a good crew together tho and I reckon you could clean up and have plenty of fun!

Yup, managed to get a bit further in and the areas have opened up a lot more giving more ways of navigating the enemy which has made it a better experience.

How much of this is cut-scene overload and crap dialogue VS. actual gameplay and atmosphere?

What I have like about previous GR (and Rainbow Six) games is that they are fairly story-lite and just leave you to get on with playing the game and becoming immersed in it. From what I've seen from the GameTrailers review there seems to be an awful lot of cut-scenes and banal dialogue.

Elite being a total cakewalk is taking the fun out of the game for me. Squad spotting can really cripple it, I finished an entire level 100% cause I shot one guy and basically spotted every single enemy with UAV, team headshot did all the leg work for me.
Also I think this is the end for me, when intro was rolling all I kept saying was Cue explosion.....now! Lo and behold army shooter by the numbers didn't disappoint. This is what the mighty team GRAWesome has become, then again maybe multiplayer is where it's at but I awould always like to think previous efforts have been a good split between SP and MP.

Yeah the fact that on the hardest difficulty you can just hide and spot all the bad guys is abit of a bummer really. Makes the game far to easy. But on the flip side it gives you total control over how you play it, risky or not. Getting through sections of it without being spotted or detected is highly satisfying. Running and gunning using the system to draw fire and take down multiple bad guys also feels great. So much of it is down to how you play it.

Im really enjoying it so far.

dont get the scoring system on this. ran through a level perfectly (or so i thought) and got 83/100. Then the airport level I got 90% accuracy, lost a team mate and died twice myself and ended up with 100/100!! would def like to try the co-op tho if anyones up for it?

I'm just not feeling this at all

Just like the Rainbow 6 and Ghost Recon games of days gone by the presentation is atrocious. Awkward menus with blurry text and a non existant story that just involves going to random places on a digital map and being told to do things. 100% Forgettable.

The graphics are atrocious too, coming straight from Max Payne, this game looks absolutely awful, jaggy, low res textures and next to no lighting. Totally totally bland.

It didn't help that I wasn't even able to play co-op last night because the ubisoft server was unavailable and they refused to let me play, despite being the friggin server myself.

i can't think of any title that had "atrocious" visuals. in fact when the first GRAW came out on 360 i was very impressed with by the high quality presentation.

can someone please report whether or not any extra co-op missions are included? thanks!

I really loved both GRAW's and the first Rainbow Six Vegas game during the first period of this generation. Those were a few games that showed what this generation was capable of, they were much more advanced than other early gen stuff like Quake 4 etc. I think most gamers who owned the RROD ridden 360's of 2005 have fond memories of the first Advanced Warfighter.

After that the competition became fierce and these games are kind of forgotten now. I was hoping for Future Soldier to be an Advanced Warfighter 3, i greatly enjoyed the campaign of 2, but every review i've seen of it make the game seem like a whole different beast. I wanted explosions and bullets flying around me, thats what I liked about the Advanced Warfighter games.

By the way, Gears hit about a year after GRAW. The cover system was being made more accessible in Gears though.

Does this have a similar mode to the brilliant co-op Terrorist Hunt in R6Vegas?

Gears of war perfected the cover system... It is incredibly intuitive, elegant and pretty much perfect. Games try to improve upon it all the time but they simply fail. That aspect of the game will most likley never be bettered.

The cover mechanics in this are still a lot better than in most games though, even if it's not quite Gears.
