Top Gun Hard Lock (Demo) review

Had a quick go on the Xbox demo of Top Gun Hard Lock. I find it hard to get into arcade flight games like Afterburner, but I'm guessing if you like that, you should probably give this a go.

Visually quite impressive - apart from all the HUD stuff, they've used some filters to make everything look quite gritty and real.

Gameplay is all about locking for a while and chasing while trying to get the lock and then shooting them out of the sky. I wasn't quite sure what I was meant to be doing sometimes, but it gives you hints like a big X on the screen next to a target telling you to initiate the chase.

Locking Reticule changes size with success, so if you get a lock and kill it gets bigger, but if you are rubbish like I was, it get smaller, thus penalising my weak skills.

Avoiding missiles and other planes trying to lock you was fun.

This was okay fun, it gets old quite quick though. Assault Horizon does the same thing but much better

i liked the demo, especially the atmosphere of the original motion picture felt strongly present. but the game has yet to get a single positive press review.

did you play through the full game and can you please elaborate on what you liked and what not?

I originally tried the demo a bit back and then some of the later missions around a mates house. It's pretty much the same throughout, it's pretty competently put together for a budget title and will work better for those who are fans of the film (not me really). But it's the lack of variety in the missions that hurts it, it's an issue that Assault Horizon barely got around with the addition of helicopter missions, bombing and stealth runs. Reasonable but if you haven't already played Assault Horizon I'd go with that as it can be picked up for pretty much the same price now.
