Hmm I think I read that somewhere that they were going to add it as an option. Nonetheless I tended to spend a while sifting through the communities sectio online in PES 2012 and finding local players. Its more important for Australian players as we're far more regional than you guys and playing EU/US players is just lag central.
I reckon I joined a good 10+ communities, found loads of players locally and basically just enjoyed playing that way. It doesnt let you do that in the MLO but really I think Konami should take a leaf out of some games like Halo etc... and provide a regional matchmaking filter.
Either way... when I did get into some MLO last year they held up pretty well. Some lag but you sort of got used to the time delay. FIFA is the same but tends to hide it better (for better or worse) and has more players in general.
