One Piece Pirate Warriors [PS3] review

Koei's next Warriors game, but the least DW like with the smaller scale fights and well animated characters putting it closer to the 3rd person action game like Bayonetta.

The standard Attack/Charge*6 is now mixed up with combos and hold attacks, block is replaced with evade and unique attacks come in for range attacks (like Balloon rebounds cannon balls for luffy), lots of QTE's for plaftorm navigation and pushing the boss fights into the next stage of the bout. Although Musou attacks are a step back so far with only 1 type available, where the DW games and moved on to 3/4 types on 1 character recently.

Main meat of the game is Story mode, takes you through "most" of the important big villian fights, and much like most other anime games the "canon" of the story is just about intact.. close enough to be ok with the story stuff missing but disappointed they couldn't go the extra step in either put all the major villians in or for those they already have, putting in important side characters, as so far all the Big Villians named underlings are missing (Lion Tamers and Unicycle guy are missing from Buggy's fight and Don Kreig's 2nd in command is quite important Sanji story is missing). Definitaly feels like none one piece fans would miss out on the importances on most of the CS's with backstory missing (specially the flashbacks to childhood), Zoro's declaration he wouldn't lose again would be missing lot without knowing where he's come from.

not gone online yet, and other log mode lets you play the main story mission from the view of another character. Also the music is terrible, not just because there isn't a single song from one piece in it(like the gundam games) but it sounds like it being played from inside a tin can while the rest of the audio is fine.

So is it worth picking up if you're a large One Piece fan? I understand the game covers the time period of the first half of the manga?

Looks good from what I've seen on Youtube anyway. Can't seem to find it shops for some reason though...

      Metro gave this 2/5.

I can't stand the KOEI games, can only see this as a cash in.

I enjoyed the first DW Gundam game even though I hadn't the foggiest idea what was going on (JPN PS3) and thought this looked quite groovy but the reviews have been middling to say the least.

Shame really as the Naruto games from BanNam have been really fun.

It about the best One Piece game outside that Jump superstars and similar one piece only ds game they made. Its not a DW game like the Gundam series is, they've made an effort with the smaller character roster to turn into a B level Bayonetta/GoW, while it has the animation it, it lacks the smooth engine change between animations and sometimes the framerate(mostly in platform QTE's) and accuracy those A level action games have when it comes to nailing attacks.. is about the best way to describe as those DW roots it started from still do come through (think officer vs officer in DW).

as to the rest of the posts

From the 3 missions i've played so far to much effort has gone into the characters and CS's for this to be a quick cash in, the only let down as i've mentioned is they havn't gone far enough and sits on the same group the ubisoft's Naruto games do of not quite being accurate to the story, but as i haven't gotten to 1st major arc that as a recuring side villians in it from the Arlong arc (mainly Hachi) i can't say how much was cut what really matters to the story but being a One Piece you would know whats what anyway. And the music is ****, classic Koei soft rock but the character are all the original VA's with new lines.

Story works as the crew just after leaving Thriller Bark but before Shabondy reminisce the past starting with Buggy and goes up Marineford War but is confirmed to miss out on Coby/Zoro, Usopp/Merry, Skypiea and Thriller Bark for reasons i can not understand... but somehow Foxy Pirates makes it in... i would like to a sequel with missing stuff and the Childhood flashbacks in it.

Put a coupla hours into this.

I played through Sengoku Basara with my lady and was hoping this'd be another local co-op sensation....T'isn't though.

Annoyingly, it runs shockingly bad in split-screen, and there's so much going off and so many on screen meters that it's pretty much unplayable. They shouldn't have included co-op in this state, really.

Single player is decent fun. It kinda reminds me of Asura's Wrath, only with the gameplay/cutscene/QTE ratios greatly tweaked. There's been some great QTE's during boss fights, the moves are quite creative and satisfying, and that you can use your evade to cancel boss attacks and extend combos means the action isn't totally mindless.

The levels are kinda rubbish looking though - Very flat and lacking that jaunty cartoon geometry.

It's alright, but ultimately the duff co-op makes me feel a little cheated.

I thought it was decent. Couldn't find it anywhere local, so purchased it on the playstation store. Finished the main log already, but i still have all the other logs to invest in.

They should really have invested more in the musou levels and less of the action, the action levels sometimes where out their welcome and have camera issues. The characters fight really well and the combat doesn't feel light. Some really nice animation to boot.

Thought the music was fine myself, i'm using 7.1 surround sound headphones, some of the audio does sound rough in places. The music sounds very musou while getting that One Piece vibe. I can see why there would not be any proper music due to licensing issues.

Perfect for One Piece (Some of the later cutscenes in this still make me have mantears like the show) or Musou fans, if you don't like this kind of game this one won't change your opinion.

I read the first six volumes a few years back and loved them, but the game just feels like a skim reading of them I guess.

The opening with those giant dudes shooting lasers was well confusing, and because each episode crams an hour or so of reading into about twenty minutes, a lot of characters' weepy reactions in cut scenes don't fully make sense to me.

It does make me want to read it again though!

The bit at the start is quite far into the anime arcs well past what i have seen so far, i know of those giant robot guys but i have yet to see the episodes they appear in luffy already knows gear third so it has to be at least a few arcs on from enies lobby which is where im upto as thats as far as kaizoku fansubs go.

It's a shame that certain bits are missing storywise but it's great going back & revisiting stories from the crews past. Most of the crews backstorys are pretty sad none of them had an easy life but Choppers story is particularly heart wrenching. Chopper & Usoppu are my two faves for characters, the battle between Usopp & Luffy was pretty shocking i never would have imagined he would face off like that as he is usually a coward but actually held his own against luffy for a short time but was actually prepared to die to save the going merry. Loved that i got to play that battle in the game.

I imagine if you are really into the series you will get a lot more out of the game than someone who doesn't know the adventures of the crew. I never really tire of onepiece games, god knows what ****e the metro printed about it to rate it a 2 pfft lol.

Your pretty far behind if last watched up to Enis Lobby (i've been using Yibis/Yonkou 720p subs), the bit at the start is is pretty much One Piece timeskip moment to ready them for 2nd half of the grand line and in a really nice touch they Gray up

                      Armour Haki

his 3rd Gear Attack which somthing only fans of the series would have put the extra work into.

Picked this up in the end. Glad I did!

It looks very nice. Suitably colourful and the animation is very nice.

Cutscenes and story are way OTT. Super enjoyable though despite not having a clue what's going on.

Music is cheesy but seems to fit what's going on.

Controls are good and the combat feels meaty enough.

How does Nami stay standing up?

                          So, yeah, good times.

Sounds good from the fans that have been playing this. Shame I can't find a copy in Leeds (in any of the retailers for that matter. What!?)

May wait until comes down in price as there seems to be a cluster**** of releases these next 4 weeks (do pardon my language).

I was in the same boat Paddy, with hmv and game turning into only stocking just AAA titles. Being able to track down little gems like this nowadays becoming an imposibility. Online retail and PSN being what they are, only way you will only get it. Personally i would rather see specialist game stores die.
