Sonic Adventure 2 HD (PSN/XBLA) review

So yeah after being in love with Nights HD I decided to cave for this one for the sake of it too.

And its not bad at all. Its still SA2, so there are still these ****ty non-Sonic/Shadow levels... but I played a fair bit through both campaigns and I have fun with it, more than I ever thought I would. I enjoy the Sonic levels, and the cutscenes with the music being louder than the VA. Its structured pretty good, the story modes, the way you can replay levels... its just too bad that Tails and Knuckles get just as much play time. I'd rather had 75% Sonic/Shadow and 25% the others.

Graphically, its amazing. Widescreen, 720p (sadly no 1080p?), 60fps that never lets down, good chunk of AA... Its three times as smooth as Generations and a MUCH better port than SA1 HD.

If you buy just the game, its the DC version with corresponding title screen etc. If you upgrade with the kinda expensive Battle DLC, it changes into the Gamecube version. I did anyway, I never played the GC upgrade before.

Wasn't the GC stuff just a VS, I had both versions and I can't remember.

Bought this, its pretty much as you'd expect. Having no falters in the frames is nice and its clean looking. Def puts Sonic Adv 1 port to shame

There's really not much to say about this. It's a spot-on port of the GameCube version (the 'Battle' additions being spun off as a separate download). It's in 16:9 (unlike the port of its predecessor), and runs in 60fps (but then, so did both the Dreamcast and GameCube versions). The console versions are only 720p, presumably the PC version is the way to go for 1080p+ resolutions.

I've always been a closet fan of the game. Much more focused and polished than its predecessor, the Sonic and Shadow stages remain the best example of 3D Sonic, and there's plenty of replay value thanks to the different missions and rankings. I have little interest I the Chao stuff, but my brother informs me that the 'Battle' version of the game has the most comprehensive Chao features. I'll take his word for it.

Credit where due, a spot-on port of what many regard to be the best 3D Sonic.

Nice port by no way is this best Sonic game in 3D . Sonic Adv is just a much better game with better designed levels imo

Well, I finally played this on the 360 and I really can't see what the fuss is about. Like most Dreamcast to HD ports, it really doesn't look that much better than a DC running in VGA. The textures for the most part are all the same as the ones used in the DC and Game Cube game and it really shows. The over sensitive snowboard controls are still present. The dodgy camera is still there. The same glitches are there and Sonic can still get stuck. Basically it's a straight port with nothing done about fixing the issues. Yeah, it may have 16:9 screen format but even that isn't 100% correct since many aspects look squashed. At least NiGHTS really does look a hell of a lot better than the Saturn game. Still missing features that was on the Saturn mind you I'll just stick with my Dreamcast Sonic Adventure 2.
