It bested all previous consoles in every department. It could play DVD Audio discs, Super Audio CD, had slots for digital camera memory cards, had gigabit Ethernet and wifi built in and optical out. Sony threw in everything AND produced two great launch titles. Now, it sounds to me like the Zombi U average on metacritic is well off but that doesn't change the fact that RFOM and Motorstorm were both great games that really showed with next generation HD consoles can do. The launch of PS3 was in a completely different league to the Wii U launch. I'm going to get a WiiU and I'm expecting some great games for it, from Nintendo AND third parties but let's not delude ourselves that this launch was better than PS3's.
ZombiU has been severely underrated in some circles of the press. You only have to look at the first play thread on here to see that.

This launch has been a lot better than the PS3 launch. The WiiU already has more good games than the PS3 had in its first year

I don't care about the technical side of things, I don't buy a nintendo console so I can play "super duper mega audio CDs" I care about the gaming side of the console.

Ive already had more fun with the WiiU than I have had with my 3DS and PsVita put together, which makes it the best piece of gaming hardware I have bought for sometime and great launch for the console.

Followed by nearly two years of bugger all of interest coming out on it ...Last time I check ZombiU wasn't the ONLY launch title for the WiiU.

I don't want the WiiU to play DVD's , BR etc ... It's a games machine, so the focus should be the games ...

The PS3's launch was no better than the WiiU's I am sorry but it really wasn't.

Here's my input on this argument.

Hi. I bought a Wii U and I don't regret the purchase. I'm thoroughly enjoying the games regardless of other platforms existing and the fact that I own a near top spec PC.

        There we go.

        Peace out.

That's way too calm and reasonable opinion! I'm outraged!

But that's the thing , WiiU Gamepad <> Wii Remote, they are two completely different things ..

Where you see 'novelty' I see Nintendo trying to do something different. Yeah it didn't work very well (for me anyway) with the Wii, and I would consider the Wii Remote a novelty, but that is not true of the Gamepad, and lets not forget the games that people want to be 'hardcore' over (blops2 for exmaple) can be used with the Pro Controller ...

Or is the Pro Controller a novelty as well?

There is more to the Gamepad than just using it in a 'novel' way in games, its an interface to the Wiiu itself, its a controller, its a screen to play games on, its a tool to interact with MiiVerse etc. If you had spent any time with the console you would understand that.

I was trying to highlight that it's all just opinion. One man's poor launch is another man's awesome launch!

I see me only having one console in the future and that console will be a Nintendo. PCs can do what the Sony and MS consoles can do and they do it better and the games are cheaper and there's more of them and more variety so I think that PS4 and next Xbox will just be a disappointment to me. Wii U will - I hope - have the type of games that don't appear anywhere else.

I might pick one up this evening.

EDIT: I don't see the wiimote as a novelty. I see it as the greatest FPS control scheme ever invented. The sports titles are genuinely enhanced by motion controls too, especially with motion+. I'm a bit disappointed to see it abandoned really. I always play PS3 games with move if I have the option too.

I have spent time with it, and i still think its a novelty....its not something different either. Its a cheap tablet with awful battery life.

At least they have used their brain with the bundling of the pro controller this time, however then you are just left with a **** 360 albeit with nintendo games, and at 2005 launch prices.

Its like i said, only because its nintendo do they get away with it. People dont care what they have to use to play ninty games.

I never had much negativity towards the Wii when it was announced that it was basically a very slightly upgraded gamecube internally, because i knew they didnt have it easy with the cube. However they have had it easy with Wii DS which were both massively successful, and they have stuck to this ethos of making things their own way......in other words if you want our games you will buy any old hardware we chuck your way.

Then again if they were still supporting the snes, i'd still be buying the games. I guess that answers some things, but i wouldnt expect to pay ?300 for that privilege either.

All this talk of which console had better launch games than the other is ultimately rather pointless. One mans excellent launch games is another mans poor launch games. Their really is no such thing as best console to have the best launch games, fair enough maybe you can judge it by critical acclaim but at the end of the day only you and i individually can decide what constitutes a good/bad launch line up. For me personally i love the launch games of Wii U, i like having lots of choice. But at the same time i can also understand that some of you dont find it all appealing.

                      Really.

ZombiU. Nintendo Land. NSMBU. black Ops 2. Sonic racing. Assassins Creed 3. Batman. Trine 2 directors cut. Nano Assualt Neo.

That's an amazing launch line up.

ive been gaming all my life, consoles don't usually have more than one game that good at launch, never mind 9... Although we should probably call it 8 as batman is not a new game. Still a great list though.

not really if you already have an xbox or ps3, as they are nearly all ports or remakes.....where is the original stuff from nintendo?

Yeah it comes down to what you like. If I look back at the ps3 launch there's tons of great stuff in there. I just looked at the WiiU line up and I'm stunned at how many actual games there are to be honest. There's loads by the look of it. From what I'd read it seemed like it was zombi U, one or more 'filler' Mario titles and the rest were multi-format titles that I'd probably play on another platform. I shall investigate further.

Thems the perks of releasing current gen tech.......7 years late.

May aswell take advantage while it can still handle the current engines. I would imagine it will be a different story when unreal engine 4 arrives.

The point I was making was that the quality of games is good. And anyway, I have an Xbox and a Ps3 and still hadn't played Black Ops or Assassins creed 3 till I got my WiiU.

The are plenty of people out there that won't have played those games, believe it or not, and now if they want too they can on the Wii U. This shows that the WiiU won't just be about exclusives like previous Nintendo consoles. In fact Im actually leaning towards buying multi format games whenever I can on the WiiU now, just because Im enjoying the console so much.

                                yeah - your right

it does seem disapointing; i would have loved to have seen some really nice 'must haves'. I demoed the wiiu the other day and the tablet controller was fantastic - very comfortable indeed. I am tempted with zombiu though....
