Playstation All-Star Battle Royale [PS3/PSVita] review

    [PS3 version tested]

I think somebody forgot to tell Sony Santa Monica that the Beta is finished... oh, they didn't get that memo?
Because they could've put a bit more effort into the presentation, instead of using that 'my first website' generator for their front-end and well, everything.

Regardless, it plays fine. Nothing outwardly special.
Similar to that Nintendo title. But unlike that game, the emphasis is on landing specials to K.O instead of ring-outs. Fighting mechanics wise you land combos to build AP points for your Super meter, or you can steal AP points (to bolster your own) will also build Super gauge. It levels up to three levels, and naturally the highest means better right?
In most cases, yes. Though there is naturally some imbalance to the roster, as certain characters are a lot easier to combo (or spam) and some build meter at a crazy quick rate, whilst others are quite pedestrian. Also the choices of Super moves for their respective levels seem a little out of place. As characters like Sly who has an amazingly quick lvl. 1 super and going for his lvl.2 or lvl.3 is not worth the effort. Yet Drakes Super 1 & 2 are pretty hard to land, and you have to be a specified distance for Super lvl.1 to land. Or lucky to catch them mid-air. Very tricky when one Vs. one.

I wouldn't class the character tier list is almost quite as clear cut as SSB: Brawl (Meta Knight > everyone else) as there is still a lot of experimenting to be done, but there are quite a few such as Kratos/ Raiden/ Sly/ Radec/ Sackboy which have the age old minimum input maximum output in their fighting styles.

    Still, early days.

I didn't like the beta but the chance to play as Drake, Cole, new Dante and Raiden as well as getting 2 games for the price of 1 convinced me to purchase.

I'm very glad I did though as.the full game is pretty good fun!!

Presentationally it is VERY basic. Static images for story intro and outro scenes.

Gameplay is quick and easy. Square, Triangle and Circle combined with different directions perform different moves of varying strength.

The stages are great. They start off as one title (Parappa say) and as the fight goes on other Sony games bleed into it. Chop Chop Master Onion ends up going Hulk and battering the hell out of a massive Spider from Killzone!!

Other stages include Sly Raccoon, LBP, Uncharted, BioShock Infinite.(?!) and God of War. There's more but I haven't played on them yet.

The Vita version is every bit as good as the PS3 version. Graphically it is very sharp and detailed with now slowdown or glitching.

I really like the way jump is on it's own button too rather than pressing up on the D-pad.

    This is good fun!

I picked this up on Friday and i'm so glad I did! Only played the Vita version so far as it took ages to download on my PS3. Visuals are nice and sharp in game it looks sweet. But as said above the presentation is really really bad! This makes some mega drive games look nice!

Controls are nice and easy and so far all the characters play different. Raiden and Dante seem to have a edge over other characters especially Heihachi.

Looking forward to playing more. Also online worked nice and easy! Excellent fun, i'm not a smash brothers fan but have got really into this.

This is pretty good. Nice to find cross platform play done right.

lots of little niggles though. Why is there no on screen score during fight? Why when matches start are you in tiny little rooms where everyone is just bouncing off the walls in a big mess? Why does there seem to be no unlockable characters?

Its not quite smash brothers is it?

I was saying the cross platform play is done right, but it seems I was wrong.

i just loaded up the vita version after playing. The ps3 version and it has not kept the levels of my characters. Anyone else having problems with it?

            They're separate games.

"Cross Play" refers to PS3 vs Vita MP.

Oh, really? I'm sure I've read in a few different reviews that your game state is shared... (Like motorstorm)

Not that I've seen. Certainly not in my game either.

Well that's disappointing, means you have to unlock everything twice.

Game saves are shared. Some people are having issues with them syncing up tho and apparently just going into the leader boards and going through the local, friends and world categories syncs your save.

Thanks, thought they were suppose to save across both platforms. Doesn't seem to have been implemented well at all though.

Tried but I still can't get the cross platform gave saving to work, considering this is a big selling feature of the game you'd think it would be the one thing Sony wouldn't want to cock up with the title.

I booted up my PS3 last night and thought time to have a crack at the PS3 version and my data was there but 3 days old :/ Nothing I had done on my vita over the weekend had synced. I then turned it off and went back to playing the vita version. Depressing!

Got this thanks to the quick price drop. After the ropey beta the full game is quite pleasant. An air of lower budget compared to Smash Bros but it plays well and some of the backgrounds are nicely handled

Theres already rumours that a sequel is being worked on which this kind of needs. It holds together quite well as a SSB alternative but next time Sony needs to put more into it as I don't feel compelled to keep playing as the content levels are fairly slight and the wiff of budget production is off putting.
