God of War: Ascension demo review

Got access to the beta which given it isn't that long till release is fairly representative of what to expect. You are a generic muscley soldier and first much choose a God to allign yourself to which minorly affects magic and weapons. From here you go to a load out screen where you can swap spells, weapon and armour as you level up and unlock them. Being purely the multiplayer this has zero of the polish that GOW3 had visually, it does the job but doesn't match the previous games standards. Once you select your mode or Quick start your taken to your loadout screen as the game locates players to compete against.

The arena in the Beta is one based on Hercules who watches as you battle in an empty circular arena. 3-4 times per 5 minute match he will cause a small energy wave to fire out which players have to jump over. Periodically a small room opens which a player can trigger arrow fire from though this too is pretty easily avoided.

Combat is largely the same as single player which means its easy to control though not that deep. The combat is also one of the biggest issues. You can parry attacks if you time it well but the system isn't well implemented for having 3 players simultaneously spamming you. I hadn't expected too much from it as multiplayer in the game seemed a stretch but hoped it might be like a lite version of Power Stone. In practice though this is much more basic and far more boring to play. After this I'll be sure to pin my hopes on the single player, though that doesn't look too hot either at the moment in the vids.

Did you get to play the demo eventually? Thanks for the input ctn, thought it was odd to take the series in that direction, it 'looked' quite fun but whether it looks fun and is fun are two very different things. The polish on GOW was partly what made it for me and is why I never took to the handheld games as well, is it suppose to improve for the finished product?

Not heard much, thought there would have been some more thoughts since the single player demo came with Total Recall. No-one probably bought it I really hope the single player is up to scratch.

Just played the demo that came with total recall

Yeah it's usual god of war stuff and plays like the others, the modelling on the 3 larger characters is really good especially the elephant which is who you kill just before the demo ends

Its quite a short demo to be honest and being around 700 meg I thought there would be a lot more

You start on a pier and after a few steps you fight off a few baddies plus a mid size boss which you get options to QTE death, the first main baddie seems to be a sea creature and most probably the kraken and it lobs a boat at which destroys part of the landscape

You then use the L2 and square to heal or rewind time which can be stopped at mid point to create a few jumping points to get to one point and then heal further so you can get in the elevator

Loved all the god of war games and put effort into finish them in god of war level so looking forward to this

Now that the mp is a miss its nice to hear the sp looks like it might come up to scratch. Surprising how close this is given the relatively low profile sony is giving it

I'm a sucker for all things god of war

But one thing I noticed that obviously its not final code and even though the baddies had incredible detail the graphics themselves didn't look as good as part 3

Still remember my jaw hitting the floor when I was fighting Poseidon in part 3

But the water effects were non existent so I just reckon final touches arnt in place

Well i think the MP is awesome and CTN only seemed to have played the one player game, theres a 4 v 4 team battle called team favour of the gods, where you need to control points al la domination style, and a special weapon appers where you need to kill a mega titan cyclopes, its fast and furious fun and totally mindless but great all the same.

I found the MP to be a bit all over the place. Trying to attack one guy while someone else starts smacking me about; I couldn't find a "rhythm".

Obviously it's because I'm **** at it and should stop whinging.

I'll still buy it for the SP game.

It certainly does! Sufficient to give me a Ray Harryhausen nerdgasm.

very very nice, those sfx of the hecatonch's fingers breaking is beautifully disturbing.

Didn't think they'd be able to match the scale of the Titans in the last game but that's ridiculous, I love how they manage to combine the scale which so much detail when you get in close.

I wonder if we'll see a tech demo from the studio at the PS4 event on the 20th? It's not as if they seem to need more powerful hardware.

That looks incredible, i need to grab some of the older ones, I really enjoyed the first one but by the time 2 had it, it was the next gen.

after playing the first i ended up finishing all the versions of the game (God of war collections on PS3)

God Of War 3 is just a stunning game to watch
