Paper Mario - Sticker Star [3DS] review

Before Super Paper Mario on the Wii, the last Paper Mario game I played was the original on the N64. This feels very much like that from what I remember. I'm a few hours in and can honestly say I can't wait to go back.

The battle mechanics revolve around stickers that you've collected from blocks or peeled away from other objects. Initially you can only use one sticker at a time, but you can use coins to play a slot machine and if you match 2 or 3 items, that's how many stickers you can use for that battle.

Stickers come in many types and sizes, but you only have 2 pages in your sticker book to start with (I'm guessing this gets increased with time/experience). Battles are frequent enough that you never have too many, and stickers respawn when you re-enter and area you've already left.

I don't remember a world map in Paper Mario but this has one and reminds me very much of ye olde Mario games.

Very much looking forward to playing this for the rest of the day.

Really enjoying it so far, story is fun & i don't mind the new non rpg levelling style of battle system. The one thing that i do love is that you can move your 3DS & it makes the shiny stickers in your book sparkle like they are real, it's a fantastic effect.

Damn, I'd seen that but didn't realise! Nice catch.

got past the sand world but i now need to find more special items as the way is blocked, explored more of town & found a lead on what to do next. Love all the little quirks, things unfolding or popping up like a picture book, finally nice to have some decent 3ds games.

I can’t remember which review I read but one put me off the game saying that some of the puzzles were completely nonsensical and quite frustrating. I haven’t seen any comments here that seem to back that up, is it poppycock of the highest order or is there some truth in the statement?

I haven't yet encountered any nonsensical puzzles (played for 6 hours, so I'm not that far), but one thing that's a minor annoyance is that if you try to use the wrong sticker to a puzzle, you lose it anyway and have to go back and get another one, it could have just said that it doesn't work here. That's the only irk I've found out thus far.

Is this actually any good then? Had it on my xmas list but the reviews seemed pretty negative, so I decided against it. Really wanted it to be good... anything like Thousand Year Door?

                        I keep getting stuck!

I've barely left the tutorial and I have no idea of where to go, I've got 3 dead ends and no clue of how to get past . Bah

                            Here:

jump the little white fence between 2 of the 3 houses and there's a toad in the back there.

Yeah I had to look it up! I hate doing that!

Anyways, I played about 3 hours last night and am very much enjoying it, the battles do get in the way though sometimes, I kinda just like exploring
